hi john,
yes i agree with you about driving that foden.that’s where the swedes conqured the market with the comfort and “car like” driving characteristics that early volvo’s and scanias offered, here is a picture of me and my mate neil jones on the 2004 anglo-scottish road run heading north on the a6 @ shap.

And here we have T70 loaded with " two eyes to the sky " standing in the depot at Milnthorpe . You should have had T70 behind the F88 ! that would have stopped it straddling the white line !! Dennis.

hi dennis,
what a shot,i love atki. borderers for me they epitomised uk road haulage in the 1970’s.back in june 2007 me and a truck salesman mate of mine called charles lee had to go to west wales to collect a customers atki.when we left the customers premises i was driving the atki.she had a 220 ■■■■■■■ and david brown (crap gearbox) and i went down the m4 with the biggest smile on my face,of course not having a fuller (awesome gearbox) she ran out of revs at around 55-60,there was a lovely crackle to that ■■■■■■■ though. a proper lorry.
as for whoever sheeted that load i give them 15 out of 10.far better than any attempt an anorak/amatuer like myself could do.when i had my trailer behind my f88 my mate stan sheeted it for me,the sheet looked just like the one on that bewick load, almost a “skin like appearance”.my attempts tend to look like a spanish gallion in full sail.
.
regards andrew

And here Andrew is a shot of 20ton of Workington Pig Iron in the back of one of our tippers . We also loaded pig iron on the flats , we took it mainly to the Ford foundry at Dagenham so your Capri engine block will probably contain some of this Iron !!! Dennis.

Thats how all our trailers were Andrew though that load would have been sheeted and roped by the first driver I started as it is circa 1971 as the fleet grew we had shunters in the various customers and without exception they were a fine set of lads that turned the trailers round !! Dennis.

The top speed might have been down to the axle ratio - if I remember correctly, the overdrive top ratio in the DB 06/600 is slightly taller than the overdrive top ratio in the Fuller RTO-610. Totally agree with you though - the ■■■■■■■■■■ combination is horrible. It works OK on the motorway once you’ve wound it up, but it’s utterly useless across country when well-freighted - as the part-owner of a Borderer with that spec, and having driven a number of others too, I can vouch for it! Mind you, it’ll hold at least 65 mph when it is finally wound up. A ■■■■■■■■■■ ERF A Series that I regularly drove was good for more than that, even
The ratio gaps on the DB gearbox are so wide that you have to wind it up to absolutely maximum revs in each gear for it them to drop into the next one bang on maximum torque at 1500 rpm. However, the ratio gap between 4th & 5th is wider, so it doesn’t even drop onto maximum torque, and therefore an up-change from 4th to 5th on a slight gradient may well fail as the road speed drops off even more during that longer gearchange
Any gradient that dropped it much below 1500rpm meant a down-change because the torque dropped away so sharply below the peak. The Gardner, on the other hand, can handle the wide ratio gearbox better because it develops max torque at 1000rpm and the torque curve is almost flat right up to maximum revs, which contributes to the feeling that it’s going slower than it actually is. Mind you, running regularly over the valleys, you could see why JRT wanted to go for Fullers behind his Gardners!

Dead right there 240 we had 4 Borderers with DB 6spd and they were crap !! We also had one with Fuller610 & Eaton 2 speed now it was a motor and a half !! 20 gears it just kept tramping as all you did was drop it a click when it dropped 250 revs ! It wasn’t a boys motor though as you had to understand what you had under you !! Dennis.

Hi Andrew,
Quite correct Roberts did have a Deutz, from what I remember they never kept it long, but a lot of drivers spoke of it, as a good moter at the time.
Cheers Dave.
There were several companys running them old Maggies in the late 60’s around the midlands, didn’t they normally have the chrome rocket badge on the front?

hi trevh,
it’s surprising how many of them were around in the 60’s,watkinsons of keighley and ken thomas of wisbech are just two of the duetz owners that spring to mind.entress of swansea also ran the later model, newer cab duetz on a g reg.if you look earlier on in the south wales thread then you’ll see a black and white photo of it.

Andrew, I used to see some in Wolverhampton but I can’t remember who ran them, I think it may have been P.A. Carter, a London and Wolves outfit who also ran a lot of Foden 2 strokes.
