South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

Hi all, this photo is of Seabourne transports first FH this was a 12 litre with a 380 engine, and sadly a four over four gear box no splitter, this photo was taken outside Bore steel’s at Walsal.

it may well have a.l.e. on the sides of this mighty scammell contractor, but it’s welsh registration is a clear indicator that she was owned by wynns of newport when new.they were/are an iconic heavy haulier who faded away from the south wales hauage scene in the early 80’s.the aforementioned cardiff transport took over the wynns yard.

celtic recycling are fast becoming “the” firm everyone in south wales wants to drive for.they pay very good rates have all new equipment and it seems to that hardly a day goes by when a driver i know tells me that they are "trying to get in there"this is there only hino.

also based on village farm ind. estate in pyle are wilkie line they are in the pallet business and have had several units over the years, this is the man/erf they run now.

Looking at the ex Wynns Scammell Contractor reminded me of the latest DVD that is out. Volume 3 shows something that you have to see to believe. A Pacific ballast tractor with a Diamond T bringing up the rear takes a huge transformer through St Fagans en route to Aberthaw Power Station. Down past the thatched cottages on the hill, over the level crossing, then the chain saws come out to cut the trees as they make their way up to Culverhouse Cross. Cracking colour footage!! Loved the shot of the Pacific standing at the level crossing gates waiting its time to cross.

Hi Andrew too be honest I can’t remember if it was e689 or e690. Its been a long time ! I drove her the first day I worked for Joints. My dad followed me down as far as Ludlow then we swapped over and I followed him down too the yard in Port Talbot.I only used the Merc in Manchester once . She was great windows all around and the torque was great I went the yard on tick over. Much better than the Daf I used for most of my working life with joints. She had too be thrashed every where . It was anex tesco lorry only plated too 36 tonnes. The night lads hated taking it down too Port Talbot for a service ! I bet going over the Beacons it took ages lol !I know I have put these pictures on before. The Daf was my main lorry.Have you got eagle eyes and can see from the pictures was it e690 or e689?
Tony

Sorry here are the pictures.#

Tony

The old Merc I drove was the one with the beacon on the roof It was the one that Jeff used for a shunter at Shotton. The Daf was the one with my son standing in front.
Tony

I also had too use K444 for a shunter for a couple of days it was no good as a shunter as it had no windows too see if I was going too reverse into any machinery! Mind you it was nice on the road comfortable quiet and it went well. Mind not as good as the 48 !!
