Hi mercman my mate pieman was a shunter for John Raymonds in the abbey for years he’s looking for photo’s for me to borrow so fingers crossed he may have some of the shunters.i rememer NJ Churton when he had a 4 wheel Foden, also mike Pickford of Church Stretton.
Hi Chris yes it would be nice too see some pictures of the poor old shunters.I’n my mind they had the short straw having too load and sheet all the loads and usually with crap lorries. Yes I remember Mike pickford. There was also dave Maun >i think that was his name .I think he is working for Salop haulage now in Shrewsbury. My dad showed him the ropes.

I did a spell with WWalters(Rosser of Pontlliw old AECs);Velindre to Trostre with coils from the pickle line.Always chained through the middle of the coil to prevent it unspringing,as well as over the top.The younger guys had to use the motorway,us old"experienced" guys could go through the village.4 trips a night,£25(1989/90)
Hi Andrew & Co,
Do any of you remember a firm called Nicholls from South Wales who did steel in the 70’s,ran Guy Big J’s.
Don’t tell Bewick.
Cheers Dave.
hi dave,
can you be more specific?i can’t recall them.what colour where were they?where were they based and what steel works did they work out off?there were hundreds of small firms dotted around south wales in the 70/80’s.
regards andrew
Hi Andrew,
They were red,not sure which steel works they ran out of,they ran with fairly short flat trailers, quite a few drivers in the Kington area drove for them. I previously asked about a firm called Hughes, but got it wrong, they were Nicholls, possibly Wm Nicholls could be wrong, when I see one of their old drivers I will try and find out more info.
Cheers Dave.
hi all,the firm nichols were from llanelli.they were based in box yard.[now a farm foods store]they were taken over by hughes haulage in the early 70.
Hi ec14,
Thanks for that, how many lorries did they have ?,quite a few were on for them around here, also did Owens take them over.
Cheers Dave.
Hi all Clive Hughes of Hughes haulage now owns Swansea container terminal storing coil from Trostre, and re-bar from celsa in cardiff for express in neath.
Thanks Chris, they seemed to appear, then dissapeared, never knew what became of them until now, thanks to trucknet members.
Cheers Dave.
