if i remember rightly i think he said he had a daf and blew the engine on it,then went with raymonds for a bit before starting on his own again

Back in the 80’s i can remember Dave Hawkins when he had fleet commercials of Llandow repairing accident damaged ford cargo’s and he had a compound around the corner full of A.E.C’s and there was I’m sure an ex Gwynne Bowen Foden S20 8 wheeler flatbed up the back of the yard. Used to love watching and listening to the sound of his restored Portland Stone Mammoth Major 8 wheeler when he was getting it out of the workshop, like so many wished I’d taken some photo’s

Cheers Dave.

Hiya Andrew when I was in my teens I was a trailer mate on Brady’s last Octopus and we were down in S.Wales more or less every week – Sunday night in Llansamlet then tip 22 ton of Signode strapping in the Abbey next morning . We then usually were reloaded by Bowens back to Lancashire or somtimes Carlisle . We were often in their yard at Gorsienon and I can remember it was a chap called Jack Reece who was their Traffic Manager and somtimes Vivian Bowen the son was in the office as well .They were a quality outfit in their day probably the best in S. Wales!! On the odd occaision they couldn’t fix us up we got loaded from Trevor Phillips at Cadoxton ! Cheers Dennis.

Hi Andrew,
John Davies son and grandson both drive out of the quarries this way. I will see if he has pics of the lorries he drove for them,he finished up driving an artic for Pontrilas sawmills on timber from the forests back to the mill in the 80’s before he retired.
Cheers Dave.

Hiya …I had a Seddon like that one Andrew it had a 470AEC and a AEC 6 speed box It was ex BRS 1965 vintage our worthless traveler friends
chopped her up one weekend while the scrap price was high about 6 years ago.I would’nt think its a Gardner looking at the back hubs. But the front wings
do seem wide as though it has a heavy front axle.

Hi Andrew and fellow welshmen lol does any one remember Nick Churton ( not sure on the spelling of the surname) from just out side Church Stretton Shropshire ? My dad drove an old Atkinson Border for him. When my dad was there he had 2 lorries the Atki and a Seddon Atkinson.I remember coming down to Port Talbot in the Atki . It was really slow but coming down Neath bank it flew lol. But coming back up it was really slow lol.It was when the first Volvo F10’s come out so about the mid 80’s .They had a yard in Church Stretton and it was the first time I tried to reverse an artic in the yard .My dad told me too get out in his usual way ( feefing and shouting ) too get out !! Another driver was Bill Shuker he was there too.He went on too be a milk man .I think he is retired now.I haven’t seen Bill since my dads funeral.

hi tony,
yes i do recall n.j. churton,i used to see them in the abbey every night of the week.they had a white fl10.it’s such a shame that all of these compnies and characters are just a memory now.
regards andrew

Hi andrew I could tell you lots of stories about nick but he’s still around and I don’t want him too come around and do me in lol. No mostly it was my dad and nick going to the pubs in Church Stretton and getting drunk. He also used too wear wooden clogs ! Not all the time mind you. Also Bill Shuker was a big friend of my dad and I new his daughter from when I was a baby.Sorry getting off the subject ! Like I said before when dad worked for the them they had an old Atki I think with a Gardner 180. Also Seddon Atki that was the posh one. I know on some off the other forums they had been knocking Gardner engines but at the time they were good engines very reliable. The trouble with all the british manufactures not just engines , cars ,bikes and lorries they didn’t go with the times and thats why the foreign lorries are the norm now .Sorry for going on ! Buzzing lol Take care .
Tony

HIeveryone, the next few photos are of ex joint subby the late Geof Hewson’s three Magnums, these were taken post joint motorways when Geof had engaged in container work and are pictured here at the first Hereford show in 2003

S208 CTV was driven by Geof’s son Ricky,S210 CTV was driven by Scott these two were 4x2’s ,the third one driven by Geof was a 6 wheeler with a mid lift …
