gah1950:
hello paul,
you would be hard pressed to get one of those doubles around the bend in bailey street.lol
.
graham.
Hi Graham, these would be more trouble than you could imagine on local deliveries!
Here in Florida they can only run on the Turnpike, as with many other States.( Toll Roads)
There are 4 drop-yards where single trailers are dropped and hooked and vice versa. The northern point is in Wildwood just south of I-75, one in Orlando at I-4, one at FT Lauderdale and the most southern in Kendall/ Miami.
CVS and Walgreens the drug store people have distribution centers in Orlando and run 48 ft trailers down to Miami for local guys to deliver, the line-haul driver bringing empties back north. They normally run day and night shifts.
All trailers here are tandem axles, and the tandem bogie slides to give you a 41ft kingpin to to centre of tandem or shorter distance. The heaviest trailer is the lead trailer with the axle set at its longest 41 ft position, the tail being set at 38/39 ft for the best stability and tracking. They are seldom reversed, but can be if in a pinch.
Its a good system and economic way to move trailers that are primarily loaded one way only.
No special driving test needed, just a written test on double trailers, and a classroom certification to get a Turnpike doubles authorisation.
The work you do on STGO is far more difficult and demanding, requiring much greater skill and driving ability.
Paul
hello paul,
i think i know what you mean with the sliders,i have been into liverpool docks where american container lines are and it really amazed me to see a normal 40 foot trailer extended by means of bogie adjustment and deck adjustment,a lot of airbus components are handled there which are a fair old length, did you by any chance know cold start when you worked for alan.?
regards graham.

Grahamâs mighty Scania to haul this thread back to the front page.
Thanks Dave, I missed yesterday.
Was due to be off Friday until Tuesday, but another driver called in sick yesterday so off to work I went.
No holiday here today. Hope the weathers fine with you!
Hi Graham, cold start doesnât ring a bell, but it was August 83 when I left. I think you were working for Barry Cosslett at that time.
Those are great pics you have sent to Dave, really impressive. Have you run into my cousins boy, Ben lately?
The new Scania looks the business, no doubt a cracking drive.
Regards to all Paul.

Hi Paul,
Not great weather here. Its been a bit wet today and although Saturday and Sunday were dry,it was on the cool side.
I havenât seen Grahamâs new Scania in the flesh, even though he has been in and out of these quarries near me a few times. As you say it looks a nice motor. We will see it one of these days when he comes up here again.
Cheers Dave.
Can imagine your face if you saw that pic with your unit on the front Dai,
Neil.
Entry forms for Hereford truck show [August 11/12] are available now if any one wants to take their truck. Was a good show last year.
Neil.
I found this site accidentaly just recently as after 26 years of driving heavies in 1999 our company Joint motorways, I worked there for 16 years sadly went into receivership and I decided to leave haulage and went to work in a factory so lost contact with my old pals and I now sadly read a few of them have passed away and just like to say sorry I didânt say my final farewells to them,
