I have a useless memory for figures. However if it is written down somewhere, and I know where to find it, all I have to remember is where to look.

I worked for a number of years for an insurance broker which handled the accounts of a lot of the haulage fleets in south Wales. Everything was on paper files in those days, and when the old stuff was being thrown out I would go through it and take out the vehicle details. This meant I had several hundred pages of notes, and it is these I now refer to when someone asks about who ran what. Just my way of making sense of the world I suppose, but I am certainly not alone and there are dozens of other lorry watchers who have the same sort of info, either from “official” sources like mine or from direct observation.

hi all,
first thing this morning i received the sad news that my former boss had passed away.alun jones was the m.d. of joint motorways and in my opinion, based on what i saw during my involvement with the company, alun was regarded as a very hard working, very well educated, businessman.he was never as fortunate as some of us regarding his health.though this didn’t stop his determination to run the family firm successfully.during my fathers time at the company, alun was the boss’s son who accompanied the old man on many trips up the road.a quiet, reserved, private man whose working life was quite literally “joint motorways”.r.i.p. Al.
regards andrew.

I have details of 77 lorries, but as to how many they had at any one time, well, I guess that’s for someone closer to the business to answer. I do recall when I worked in Cardiff in the early '90s and made the daily drive from Pontardulais I’d see upwards of a dozen on the M4. At that time I had a hand-held dictating machine, which was great for recording wagons as I saw them.

They sent a couple of the 8 wheel maggies to the opencast in Stoke, and I’m sure I saw an artic as well, but they were blue with the White band

Wow. My Dad used to park his dark blue Triumph 2000 RWN99G on the pavement next to that No Parking sign. I remember the car spares supplier on the left as you went in, Mr Criddle’s office was first right, he sat by the window, and Dad had a desk further back. On the first floor there was a toilet with a hole in the roof and a lot of foliage growing through it. There was an old Jewish tailor who had a room on the first floor, and Dad used to get his jackets and shirts altered by him. I went to Dynevor school which was 5-10 minutes trot away, and I used to go straight there when the lunch break bell went, and both of us would head up Kings Lane to Anne’s Cafe on High Street where I’d have egg and chips or such like. Whilst waiting in the office I’d find all manner of old lorry brochures in the cupboards, and try to compile a list of all the lorries in the George Beer fleet.

There was a lad in our road called Mario DeMarco who was a couple of years older than me. As a young teenager he started throwing his weight around, but then he got a job with George Beer in the workshop and all of a sudden he became a pal again, even giving me lifts on his Honda CB250 motorcycle, pre-helmet days of course.

That doorway was very low and there were all manner of things piled up in the corridor, usually stuff destined for the workshop which was just past the Cardiff Arms pub.

One day, on a lunch break visit, I had the family camera with me, and managed to find my way up on to the railway track opposite and take a picture looking down on 51 The Strand, with Dad standing outside. At 14 years old I had yet to master the art of taking pictures, and the result was very fuzzy. I will see if I can find the print.

Dai, thank you so much for posting this picture. As you can see it brings back a lot of memories.

Hi all, Andrew sad news about Alun Jones, may he rest in peace.

Daibootsy, and Andrew Porter great local knowledge. Andrew I used to know the reg no’s of all the buses, and lorries around my way as a kid.
