Hi all,
Earlier today,i hastily Parked my car at the now overgrown gates of what was entress transports yard in birchgrove Swansea to catch this British army oshkosh.probably returning from the castle Martin tank range in pembs? I am guessing there is a weight limit on a bridge between jct.44 and 46 on the m4.several times I have seen the loaded tank transporters avoid that stretch of the m4? By the time i was on the Briton ferry flyover my forward facing car camera caught the others.i think they are powered by c15 caterpillar and an Allison automatic gearbox.

Hiya,
Just wondering why these transporters don’t have military paint jobs and all have
civilian reg no’s, are they operated under contract by a private haulier. They look
like they’ve also got a road fund licence, military vehicles are exempt.
thanks harry, long retired.

those oshkosh are operated by a company called fastrax from an army base in salisbury.i think? they might be detroit powered? i also meant to say between jct.44 and 45 on the m4.

Hello Andrew,
You are correct in saying there is a weight restriction on the river crossing prior to jcn 45 w/b, but again common sense is not being used in diverting heavy loads through llansamlet because it is possible for four or even more 44 tonners to be on that bridge at any one time where as a simple rolling block could be used on that part of the M4 ,With the spread of weight on all those axle’s the ground pressure would’nt be great,We took a Cat 777 throught llansamlet the other day and met the tanks who also were using the heavy route.   .

Hi graham,
Thanks for the information.i bet that was entertaining when you all met up.i agree with you about it being a strange decision to have to use that heavy route.i also agree about the ground pressure,I bet the Irish fridge vans could create more of that every Saturday.though to be fair they wouldn’t be on the bridge for very long
Regards andrew.

Evening all, Harry, just part of the incompetent, and stupid political/civil service ninconpoops money saving ideas…

Dispense with our own kit…lease it in from the US, allow Unipower to die…along with a superior product…then allow our German “colleagues” to dictate such a “road friendly” non combatative axle layout for the actual transporter trailer…imagine trying to lug that dead arsed combination across country!!! Then stick a crude old Oshkosh on the front…

So there you have it totally emasculated, incapable, and “in budget”…(but we are back to “Lend Lease” again). armed forces…what is left of them.

Rule Brittania…I think not…sadly…

Cheerio for now.

hi saviem,
as usual, very well written and 100% fact.didn’t i read somewhere in truck and driver? that the first batch of trailers had to be scrapped, they were to narrow to carry our tanks!!!bit of a problem that, tank transporters that can’t.never mind the tax payer will fund it :unamused: :exclamation:
regards andrew.

For the same reason that back in the days of sail in “Men of War” the decks were always painted red - the blood didn’t show :sunglasses:
