South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

Hearse one I’ve just bought off eBay, not seen this photo of this one before, looks like it could have been when it was new

I wonder what year about this shot would have been taken?,a typical S.Wales motor of that era.I’ve never been a lover of Fodens but I’ve got to say this is a class photograph, even more so in black and white. Bewick.

I think it was LTX 872E, It was on contract for Aberdare Cables, if I can remember right, it was fitted with a 220 ■■■■■■■ 12 speed.

should of put LTX 827E.

It would have been a ■■■■■■■ 180 at that time I think Dai ! They musn’t have been able to get a 150LX  Cheers Dennis.

Quite correct Dennis, The 150 Gardner was in big demand at that time hence the fitting of The ■■■■■■■■ Leyland 680 PP Engines, In fact some of those old S21s Had 180s in them for some reason, Regards Larry.

Here is one for you Dennis,a scow octopus “weighing in”

It could have had a Foden two stroke in it, quite a few at that time did.
Cheers Dave.

Now then Andrew, being a bit “longer in the tooth” than you mate I can tell you that this eight wheeler is an Albion Caledonian, and the only thing they had in common with a Leyland was the cab! Apparently the Albion was a far superior motor than the Octopus,so I wonder if that was the reason Leyland discontinued the Caledonian  great shot though, you lads in South Wales sure can dig some good’uns out, long may you continue  Cheers Dennis.

Quite correct Dennis the firm I worked for had one & it had a Leyland 600 Engine this was 1958/9, 993 DBB Bought from Cawthorns on the T.V.T.E, , it used to pull like a train, Even when OL, the only probs was the rear tyres it used to eat them with the direct double axles, Otherwise it was good & the drivers liked it Mind you it had a good heater in I must admit, Regards Larry.

Prior to them using the the Leyland engine didn’t Albion use their own engine, bit hazy for me but I seem to recall reading something about it hence my comment about the only common thing with Leylands was the cab they fitted. Cheers Dennis.

Quite correct Dennis it was a Leyland Cab with the Rising sun Albion Badge, But as far as I can remember this model was only fitted with the Leyland 600, Engine, But of course I may be wrong, Regards Larry.

OOPS My laptop is at it again, Regards Larry.

Leyland took over Albion in 1951,so that motor was probably fitted with a Leyland engine.
Cheers Dave.

Yes is does look well mr bewick just been talking to Peter jones who was in charge of their garage on the glyn John transport facebook page, he says that in its later life it was cut down and made into a Chinese 6 but wasn’t much cop. Peter says the driver was alf witham don’t know if daibootsy knows him or of him. But 220 ■■■■■■■ and foden 12 speed box, would like to see a picture after it was cut down

So anyone know what motor this is
