Hello Andrew and Dai bootsy,
i can tell you a little story that occured back in 1964,i happened to be on one of my regular jaunts with my uncle Bert,We were just about to go into the pipe at birkenhead with an A E C Mercury MBO 405 that was owned by Hills when the tunnell police stopped him and said pull into the holding bay on the left hand side,After some questions why the sides were bulging out a gent from the ministry came and started checking and asking what are you carrying and what weight are you,My uncle was carrying a load of what then was reffered to as Manip, basically it was a load of helliwell tubes bent into a pattern for i think fords of halewood iirc.An instant G V 9 was issued and the lorry was turned around in the mouth of the tunnell and was allowed to be parked on an old bomb site in birkenhead for the purpose of off loading and was to be recovered back to cardiff.Anyway there was always a lot of Hills traffic around that area and after a good few hours waiting that particular A E C Mustang arrived and then the graft started by hand balling 8 ton of these bundelled exhaust pipes from the mercury onto the mustang for onward delivery,if there are any really old hills men still alive they alike with myself will remember the driver of the as mini mouse.once the daylight had gone so was the mercury back down to south wales under the cover of darkness and straight into penarth road for some attention from Reg Hill,At least i Saw the mersey tunnell ,Happy days or what.
.
Hills of Cardiff had a yard at Goldbourn, off the A580 East lancs rd, Lancs.
