Hi, smallcoal,
sounds a bit like the Irish lads who would load 20 tons of steel at Llanwern, then run up to Rhymney for another 20 tons of polythene on top!
hi mate that is how we ran no trailer would go out with less than 27tonne or more on it that was when the max was 38t so always overweight we did 3 scotlands & 2 north east in a week good going
Hi all,
Talking of Cardiff transport, here (courtesy of m4dogwalker) is one of their local tractors, only a tandem trailer with an export coil probably come from the abbey and heading for d shed at Swansea dock.there were tens of thousands of tonnes of coil and slab from the abbey taken to d shed every month of the year…back then!

Yes you are right,I hadn’t thought of that, when the two companies merged and became carline Distribution in the late 90’s!i thought Cardiff didn’t have many short tandems, they always had full length triaxles…heavy ones
Regards andrew.

Hi all,
Here’s a name from the past.they may have been based in notts, though they had many lorries based in South Wales years ago.they had a small base in the abbey and a fairly large one in Newport,I think? Wall’s recovery are in that yard now? E&j Meeks were probably best known in south Wales for the mid-80’s miners strike convoys.

They ran in and out of BSC Chemicals Orgreave with tar products and also Llanwern,I think they ran a night shift as I used to see them on the Ross Spur when I was on nights for Glass Glover. They were certainly well known for low-flying.

How many of us would now admit to driving on the Miner’s Strike Convoy? As I recall, one of Meek’s F10s led the iron ore convoy, while a Newport lad with a green MAN was in charge of the Coal Convoy.
I have to admit that the Arthur/Maggie stand-off earned me some decent money for doing very little work, even though it meant staring out of the windscreen through a rectangle of weldmesh!

Here are a few of gwynne Bowen, courtesy of m4dogwalker .
That is just one “heavy” platform on the 8 wheeler, made to withstand the concentrated weight of pallets of tinplate.Great shot of a motor belonging to a Great old South Wales operator! Cheers Dennis.
