Hi Andrew,a bit of a belated reply,but the V8 Mandator,RAX 98G, belonged originally to E L and E R Jones,somebody I don’t recognise.
Hi Chris,
Thanks for that,I don’t think I have heard of them
They had two V8 Mandators Andrew, the other was RWO 679G.I can’t see any more on the list.
That was a proper AEC,that MK5 of Rossers, quite modern by their standards.

hiya,
The Mk 5 of Rossers I notice has a Burnley Lancs reg No, would it
have originated from Oswald Tillotsons they were big AEC people
from that area and once collected a brand new Mercury from them
for delivery to J and E Transport who I once worked for.
thanks harry, long retired.

MORRIS BROS, FODEN REOVERY TRUCK,THE OTHER ONE IN PIC ABOVE IS A DAF. THERE WAS ALSO ONE 8 LEGGER E.R.F TOW TRUCK, WHICH WAS LATER CUT UP. I THINK THE 4 WHEELER E.R.F IS STILL ABOUT.
What a great thread this is.
I remember my first trip to South Wales was in 1968,the first of many. Those were the days when you went through Usk and “The Roman Fortress of Isca” - Caerleon to you and me.
When on tankers, late 60s and 70s, I used to tip crude benzene at Bitmac in the Llanwern complex, always used the bridge at the Newport end.Years later,in 1994,I did a few months back on tankers and was running late.I decided to use the Magor weighbridge as the other one was 0700-1630 I think.I got in the queue and was gradually moving down when there was a one hell of an argument between one of Edwards Lydbrook shunters and another driver. He didn’t know that shunters got priority on the bridge, there was no notice up to say so,and he took what he thought was his turn.
I remember he refused to shift, shouting summat like “Sod Edwards”,and in the end he got his own way. I have to say that it must have been an unwritten law at the Magor end, never any problem at the other.
Bitmac has long gone I heard,is there anything left of the Spencer Works?

hello Chris
‘spencer works’ or as known Llanwern is still there but some what vastly smaller than when you where last there. The heavy end of the works has gone , houses are being built on some parts. the weighbridges both ends of the works have gone , the magor one being demolised in the last 2 weeks. There is a new entrance being built on the old trailer park at the magor end which will include offices, visitor centre, and weighbridge. The road running the full length of the works ‘Queens way’ is now being upgrade to dual carriage way , fenced off from the works and next year will become part of the south distributary road from m4 magor to newport. Steel is being rolled only coil form at the moment to customers requirements and is then despatched either by road or rail.Hope this helps.
Thanks for that Tony.
The last time I was in there was May 1994.After tipping benzene I weighed off at the town end and parked up in a lay-by,like a dead end,and walked to a pub for some snap.I can’t recall the name of it though.
That Spiers of Melksham V8 Mandator looked to have some nasty Avon tyres on it,albeit plenty of tread, but nasty all the same.Well I suppose they had to support one of their main customers, but Avon tyres no way Jose’ !! Only ever fitted two to the front axle of a little Albion, and they were crap ! How they were ever OE equipment on Rolls Royce cars I don’t know !! Cheers Bewick.
morning andrew.
is that the new viaduct in the south of france there?,i have been threatening myself and the manageress a visit down there at some stage.
