Bewick:
Couldn’t resist putting this shot on for you Andrew!!! I was talking to one of my former drivers(ret.) yesterday who had always been a dyed in the wool Gardner man, that was until he had a stint on this 470 143,one of two we ran.He just came out with the recollection as he couldn’t believe, and still can’t, the effortless performance of the beast.Cheers Dennis.
hi dennis,
fair play i will give you that .although i personally don’t buy into the whole “scarnia” thing,i will conceed that all of the scania v8’s have something special about them.aswell as a high residual value.dennis was that 143 an ex-say (derby) motor
regards andrew.

It certainly was Andrew,I bought them both off Keltruck! IMO as an operator,in the 70/80/90’s, the Scania was by far the best motor available at the time, same as the Mercedes cars were during the same period. But from what I understand to-day both marques have deteriated somewhat in both quality and reliability. So if I was re-incarnated I think I may have some difficulty in finding a suitable motor ( I’d probably have “borrow” yours for a while!!!) Cheers Dennis.

hi john,
yes, taff did have the f86.then he had a specialy adapted daf, that could and did on many occassions weigh off 28 tonne loads .i remember tipping those (always) on nights in servo steel stourbridge.hey john, who had this f88?i took the photo around? 1981,where seabourne’s yard is now.opposite the notorious dock hotel.remember the parties/stripper’s in there when the convoy was on? ,never attended myself though, someone told me .
regards andrew
andrew i think that might have been one of the mclennan bros f88, but not 100% sure.
Hi all it was mclennans im almost certain they also had a chocolate brown one they were often parked outside the Docko the twins were residents there
hi chris,
i did wonder about mclennans.they had another one aswell, sid evans ran the middle east with it.you are bang on right about mclennans residency
regards andrew
Hey Andrew, “I’ii tell you who he drove for…and you know them…!?”…good to see you over the weekend, Steve reminded me its 10 years of the Steelboys in 2011, so big year ahead M8.

hi all,
thanks to my mate stan and his mate paul coventry,i now know this f88 was owned by the notorious mclennan twins from port talbot.i have been sent a couple of dozen brilliant middle east photos featuring this and other welsh motors.paul coventry’s father eric is one of the drivers.thanks lads.
a couple of cvh’s well travelled transcons.trucknet member rward, could tell us all about them.also in shot,a british registered f88 290,i think driven by sid evans (rip).

a few of the drivers. this photo was taken at Aksaray Turkey app.1982/3 from the left Martin CVH, 2nd unknown, 3rd left Ray Saltiel, 4th Jamie James Hicks Trans, 5 &6th unknown, 7th left Robert Hobbs Hicks Trans, 8th left Elwyn warlby Ray Saltiel trans weather really bad and every one pulled off the road, great game of football though. Transcon belonged to ray Saltiel and I think the Volvo 88 was the Mc clennans, will try and post some photos of the same park another time
