hello john.
i picked the rig up from the rear of sainsburys store , wasnt that bad a place i reversed in off the main A46 road with no probs.i know what you mean about stroud being a bit tight in places as we used to pick up military equipment from aston clinton ? a few years ago before the by-pass was built, all a lot easier now.
regards graham.

Hi Graham
Thatās something I didnāt know thereās Sainsburys in Stroud now That by pass is only around the town centre, so did you mean you picked up from Aston Down Airfield
That was a ministry stores, you did well coming along that bottom road, through Thrupp and Chalford and up that hill towards Cirencester, the ministry stores is on the top of that hill on the right, I never liked that road in a 44 tonner, let alone something like yours, low loader work is a different ball game, I admire you guys you take all that in your stride.
cheers

hiya,
Remember the motto of Wynnās who i did a bit of casual for at their Manchester depot back in the late 60s, it read you make it weāll move it and that was immaterial of where and when.
thanks harry long retired.
hi all,
i will bore the crap out of you with my malta photos next week lads
Hello John.
Thats the place where the sales of surplus military equipment was disposed of,i never took this present outfit up there but years ago we were blessed with King and Andover trailers with no rear steering and i remember there was one roundabout in stroud that was as tight as hell the trailer tyres spent most of their time running over kerbs and suchlike but today we almost dont touch kerbs with the rear steering, it is an absolute godsend and before anyone says we never had it years ago let me just say we never used to have anaesthetic to take teeth out neither but given the choice i know what i would prefer.
regards graham.

Graham if anybody tells you that they never had rear steering on trailers in their days or years ago they are very old or donāt know what they are talking about as the first āScammellā 100 tonner had rear steering and that came out in the 1920s I have posted a couple of pictures from Colin Wrights book and I will have a look to see if I have one of the rear of the trailer showing the rear steersman at work
cheers Johnnie
P S you can just see the steersmanās ācabinā in the bottom picture

hello johnnie.
you are 100% correct in your statement on rear steered trailers,of course they have been around for donkeys years especially on the really big outfits you were involved with years ago.I was just making an observation to altitude that for years if you bought a trailer in this country or even abroad you were very limited on choice and what was in fact suitable to your needs. Most trailer manufacturers would supply a two /three/ four /or even a five axle trailer with all axles fixed or if you went for an all singing and dancing job you were given a couple of self trackers to help a little bit, alright for going forward but an absolute abortion if you couldnt engage the locks for reversing.I was in fact stating to john it has only been really the last twenty odd years that forced steering trailers have come into their own in this country a slightly different design and operating criteria to what you showed us.At the time you were on heavy haulage you rightly pointed out that you had a steersman in attendance with you but today with the automatic forced steered trailers the need for an attendant steersman is taken away unless you are faced with an extremley tight spot in which you are then gratefull for an attendant to manourevre you through the obstruction,Got to go tablets are overdue,
kindest regards Graham.

A lot of people will agree with you there plant fitter, your area Bridgend has a bunch of regular contributors.
What happened to the Cardiff boys, Simon is hopefully busy at the Scania dealership, have not heard off him since Keltruck bought Silurian out. Canāt remember if Bernard is Cardiff or Newport based, not that it matters its the photos or stories that count.
I have tried to get a photo, of a Volvo VN I used to drive, had it brand new its red, white and blue. If the blue was changed to green we would have the Welsh flag.
The problem is every time I see it, its on U.S.Postal property. If I was caught taking photoās I would get the Postal inspectors reading me the riot act. Knowing my luck they would have a full scale lock down.
I can see the headlines now, Valley boy in U.S. terrorist threat. Officer, I just wanted a photo for the South Wales thread, honestly!
Regards Paul
