Soon to part with £1479

The company is called TOTAL DRIVING based in Stowmarket and Ipswich
Have been told that to get my licence do medical, all theory materials and cpc with 20hrs 121 tuition the price all in is £1479.

  1. Does this price seem reasonable?
  2. Does anyone know much about this company?
  3. Should I do a Hiab course to give me more options?
  4. How easy is it in the suffolk region to find work as a new driver?

Thanks I hope someone can be helpful…

Scania ‘R’ Series P340 OptiCruise18t
Renault Premium 300dCi 26t manual

Sorry forgot to add the trucks.

Would it be best to train in the bigger manual lorry?

Seems reasonable enough price-wise. As regards which truck, theres about a million threads on here regarding manual vs auto.

Price is ok. Avoid the 26t like the plague. Totally unsuitable for training IMO as has been discussed in a thread elsewhere.

  1. Learn to walk 1st
  2. What’s on offer via the Job centre and internet ?

you have to remember you’ll be starting in the basement regardless of hi-ab adr etc etc

Total seem to have a very good pass rate in ipswich

Don’t go for the 26 tonner. The overhang on them is nuts.

Thanks. Its not like ur car licence though is it. Pass in an auto and ur stuck with autos.

Tj from Sudbury. Do you know any companies that are happy to employ new drivers in suffolk?

Pass in an auto, aslong as you have a manual car licence you will get manual C. However I would highly recommend learning in a manual for your C so you have some knowledge of how a manual box works in a truck.

I know Goldstar do but they run their own training programme, from C to C+E, (which I’m on for C+E) and they only do C+E work

As for others im not really sure, just ringing round and visiting places is best bet once you’ve passed.

And I got panicky when I changed to a newer 18t with a slightly bigger overhang. Christ on a bicycle.

Best advice I can give vis a vis training and driving is GET THE BACK AXLE ROUND. Doesn’t matter what you’re doing, going round a loose bend or edging it past the nose of a 15 plate Bentley. If that back axle (or appropriate pivot point, between the two axles on a 3 axle rigid) is past, you can’t hit it no matter how hard you turn (assuming it’s just one edge).

Helps me a lot remembering that.

Price for all that seems reasonable

  1. Prices seems slightly high, we charge a fraction more and customers get to use a Volvo automatic 2014 plate truck bought from new that is purpose built for training. They must do a bit of haulage on the side to have bought a 26ton rigid, i could understand if its rear steer because they get round corners easier than our 5 metre wheelbase 4 wheelers, but if it just a tag axle - strange choice.

  2. Don’t know much about the company, go see them in person.

  3. Be very careful getting a HIAB licence, we train customers on our brand new PM crane with remote and all attachments to ALLMI standards, don’t spend good money on the wrong brand of card, many companies only accept ALLMI now and you need remote control on your certificate. Plus, only get the licence if you are going to use it - talk to employers/agencies - some specialise in HIAB work.

  4. Pretty much everywhere in the UK needs drivers, what local industries do you have? should be skip work if nothing else. Go knocking!

Would imagine the Scania they have is an older opticruise Scania, it will still have a clutch for setting off, see how you find it, go try it out before you part with a large sum of money, any decent training company will offer you a driving assessment, not just take your cash and dump you on a course that might be too short or too long for your ability. I’m not keen on the older Scanias with the opticruise - very slow to find gears when setting off, not like our Volvo ishift which is the fastest shifting auto gearbox - fact.

Let me know how it goes, I’m booking up soon.

Still considering Total Driving or Essex Transport Training, closest centres to me.

Have you considered John @ Flair. He’s at Chelmsford.

Also Newcroft run out of ipswich, passed my cat C with Bob there

And I’m back in London on Monday! Oh joy!

Does he use an actual Artic for training though?
