Company policy might be 5 mins but think you find VOSA will over rule that policy they like to see atleast 10 mins at both the start and end of the day
The VOSA Traffic Examiner I spoke to when I got my O-Licence said they like to see 15 minutes, ideally at the start of the shift but if you drive the same vehicle every day and you are the only driver then it can be at any point in the day. That is not set in law, but if you get stopped and you can’t convince them you have done it to their satisfaction then you are on pretty shaky ground, especially if they have found a defect on your vehicle that you should have spotted.
Paul
I would guess his tacho goes straight to Rest when stopped, had a few of those in the past, you physically had to change it to POA or Other work when required.
I prefer that to be honest, you never forget to put it on break then eh
Sure is set that way, when i do other work, and belive me my other work doesnt take long (except morning walk around 5 mins) I leave the engine running.
Also I dont need to check the load, its not my concern if it has fallen over or insecure, as long as it doesnt affect the handling of the truck.
Oh and all the other stuff, just so you know unit is a year old and trailer is only 4 months old, and only 1 driver, me.
Load security is not your concern■■? It dose not matter how old a unit or trailer is things can still go wrong. Yes I have had new units and trailers and yes still did full checks at both start and end of the day
Look, just because you have to waste your time morning and night for 20 minutes due to company policy, doesn’t mean every one else has to, VOSA has told my boss 5 minutes is ample, maybe your company has a bad Maintenance record, were as ours is excellent.
I have never been pulled in at work because they have found something I have missed on either the truck or trailer at 6 week inspection.
weeto:
You are better off having to much break than to much work with the stupid WTD/RTD Whatever its called.
I’m not bothered what I am better off having, my main aim is to make sure the record is an accurate record of my day’s work, as that is my legal obligation as a driver. If I’m working, I want it to be recording other work, not break, as I have no interest in being done for creating a false record.
Paul
So am I, but I don’t see any point in putting more work than what iv’e actually done on the tacho.
I don’t use POA, and I don’t get hours deducted for excesive breaks.
I stick the card in, walk around and check everything and go.
I don’t mess with pushing any buttons.
The only time I push a button is to put it on break.

Happy days.
That sounds like hard work if ya having to put ya card in every day, mine goes in sunday/monday, then doesnt come out till friday, a whole lot less messing about

The only time it wouldn’t be done to there satisfaction, is if they find a reportable defect.
So if I do 5 mins walk around then get pulled and they find nothing wrong I must have done it to there satisfaction.
Oh and for your information I did 29 mins other work today, no day is ever the same.
So 5 mins is enough to make sure all levels are correct no over worn tires will nuts tight load is secure and all lights working body work is secure cracks in windscreen etc etc , No time at the end of the day is not a waste becasue you can make sure nothing has broken during the day
If you check your truck over at the end of the day why do it again in the morning

Its probably for the day/night drivers i.e. shared trucks, I reckon, not for trampers, checks are different in these instances I would have thought, if its one driver, one truck week in week out surely checking does not have to be so stringent.
This is all completely off topic now but … as far as I am aware the authorities expect one vehicle check by a competent person in each 24 hour period before a vehicle/trailer is used on a public road. they don’t specify what time of day, how long it should take or even that the driver has to do it (could be he isn’t comptetent!!)

No not shift work I was tramping Europe away for upto 8 weeks at a time. Company I was working for had 2 green lights with VOSA and we also had a seperate legal guy in the office who passed on all advise not only from VOSA but on other parts of europe. In some countries you will get finned if not seen checking vehicle in the morning properly including load security. Checking the vehicle is not a waste of time its covering your own back. I have had randoom checks all over europe and they they have always commented how well i kept my taco’s and condition of my unit and trailer. Purpose of checking over at night is so that any problems that need sorting out can be done and you are ready to go in the morning. I take pride the fact I have been lucky not to be fined in any country I have been to its down to the way I work!!!
I would be interested in knowing what job you do weeto - not company but type of work.
I’ve done most types of work, easiest I’ve found was containers, and even in that I clocked up a LOT more than 20 mins a day other work, taking paperwork to offices is other work, doing your own paperwork is other work, phone calls to office is other work etc.
Personally, I think 10 mins vehicle checks is about right, even when I used the same truck day in day out, and at the end of the day 5-10 mins for a quick walk around the truck and fill out any paperwork, time sheet, pay parking etc.
I always eject my tacho’s at the end of the day after a mates decided to change to ‘other work’ in the middle of the night, oh, less than 9hrs recorded rest = combined driving time from day before, could this be what’s happened to you??

No, that’s isnt what happened, because what has been recorded on the card for the 10th isnt the same as what was recorded on the vehicle unit, a print out confirms this.
And yes, on containers and like I said not all days are the same, and we are only required to show 5 mins other work at start of shift.
Don’t come on here telling me I have to do this that and the other, it’s like being in a bloody RDC waiting room!!!

Well, someone needs to tell you, because you clearly don’t know. There’s no way you’re on boxes and only clocking 20 mins a day other work unless someone else is on your truck - which they’re not because you leave your card in.
But, never mind, you’re the 1 person out of everyone on the planet who does things correct, so congratulations, well done, and hopefully some of your wisdom and knowledge will rub off on the rest of us who’ve been doing it wrong for too many years now
People were only trying to help, you take far too much far too personally mate, you need to chill, you’d think with the amount of ‘break’ and ‘rest’ you get in a day, you’d be the most chilled person on the planet.
I am until I get some one throwing accusations about, when they know sod all, then get other so called experts coming on saying I am doing this that and the other wrong when they haven’t got a clue either, wouldn’t you?
A few of our runs are in excess of 700 miles round trip, which would include either a tip which I don’t get involved in except to open the doors, or a box change over at Southampton dock, there is minimal other work in those runs.
taffytrucker:
his name was weeto the fastest box driver in the UK
Must be nice not having to wait for in the docks for your container etc lmaooo
Since when does sat waiting need to be recorded as other work? no difference to sitting on a bay waiting to tip!
HMMMM well its not POA coz youre not avail to work you are waiting to be loaded so its other work and my taco don’t go on break when on the bay being tipped yes i have done spell on the boxes and no it wasnt on break while waiting. If you wanna play it by the rule book then even cleaning your cab out is suppose to go down as other work not whilst on break

not at all can’t remember last time i tipped at an RDC and it was VOSA through the fence at South mimms that told me about cleaning your cab out. This coming from the man that goes to Southampton docks drives for couple hundred KM’s up the road turns around and comes back with no clue how to work a taco properly. End of the day its your class 1 ticket and money for fines in your pocket. My tacos are by the book always have been and always will be.
