Something positive about trucks and cyclists

This morning my daughters school had each year group visit the local DVSA test station in turn. They all cycled around the one way system as many times as they could in 30 minutes, they overall aim being to clock up 145 miles, the same as the East-West coast to coast route. This was all to raise money for Help for Heros.

They also took the chance to educate a bit, and parked an artic alongside the “course” and got every single parent to sit in the driving seat and look out for their kid passing on the left, and note at what point they vanished. Finally they got most kids to sit in and note the poor observation. A lot of the parents were amazed how little you can see and several said they would never pass a truck on the left again.

I thought this was a brilliant idea, and nice to see something positive happening about the long standing difficulties trucks and cyclists have with each other.

THIS is what the RHA etc should be focussing on doing and providing instead of providing meaningless sound bites in the press.

Show kids while they are young so that they grow up knowing that they are massively at risk down the left hand side.

I’m sure it was virtually compulsory when I was a kid (80’s and 90’s) to do a cycling proficiency course?

Fantastic, I’ve always said the car test should have a module in it where in order to get a licence, the candidate needs to spend a few hours either driving a artic round a enclosed area, with give ways, round abouts and cones to negotiate, then go on a journey in the passenger seat. The same with motorcycles, a wee off road shot of a 125 then out as a pillion for a run.

Fair enough it would cost a bit more, but surely it would do a hell of a lot of good for road safety :grimacing:

public service films shown at silly o’clock in the morning :open_mouth:

They should re make them and show at least 2 during every Ad break when kids tv is on and a few more of the graphic ones later on In the evening.

Love or hate him/the company but Eddie Stobart had Mark Dixon visit a local school to us with the roads police unit for cycle safety week. Will try and find the video of it.
This is the sort of thing hauliers should be doing more often. It’s in all our interests to do so.
