Hi
I regret, the copy of the picture is too low res. to allow me to id the lorries.
Cheers ANDY
As mentioned previously, W.King owned Triscombe and Fenacre Quarries in Somerset, before selling to Tarmac in the 80’s. Fenacre was absorbed in to AI’s Westleigh Quarry, near Wellington…

When I lived in Reading in the 60’s/70’s the M4 was under construction and it was surfaced by trucks from the Somerset area, mainly four wheelers. I recall Alec A Castle with his BMC Mastiff as it broke down with gearbox trouble and we repaired it, it was still loaded with tarmac and was in our workshop for a day or two awaiting parts. He said that to get the tarmac out he was going to pour diesel over it and set light to it, when it softened it would come out ok (he said!!)
We used to take Limestone dust from Ashbourne to the big quarry at East Cranmore, until a firm from the Swindon area undercut us as a backload.Pete.
This was my father you are talking about. He did set fire to the tarmac. It did come out, but it did also set fire to the body.( not too badly though). I’ve found this picture of dad, sat in the same lorry. Pre- burn up.
Some memories in that pic Reghelmet (thanks for the PM by the way) and I am pleased that Alec is still alive and kicking! I THINK that one of his lorries came into our quarry near Ashbourne in Derbyshire a few years ago, though knowing my brain I could have imagined it.
Pete.

It was bought new from Henlys in Salisbury. A chap named Clive Greenwood was the salesman. He became good friends with my father over the years. He also supplied the Guy Big J’s, which we had quite a few of in the early 70’s.

We had a couple of owner drivers this way that bought lift axle six wheeler tippers from Somerset Mark. That plate looks familiar to me.
Cheer’s Dave.
Hi Dave,
Yes, that was a nice, tidy wagon and may well have come your way.
Dont know if he still operates but if so I expect it will be in Bardon/Yeoman white now.
Just found a pic of this slightly later one at the same location.
Cheers
Mark
