Someone clear a ‘which license do I need’ debate

Hi All,

Just wanting to keep myself right for someone that asked. They have a 3.5t Horsebox, and was wondering if they can tow their caravan together with the horse. Other than making sure the 3.5t can legally tow the combination weight, Is it true that if the 3.5t Horsebox and caravan exceed 3.5t train weight, then you would need C1+E to pull it as a combination?

I would say based on my limited knowledge the answer would be yes you’d need C1+E. Certainly if it was trailer it would be subject to a C1+E licence and would also fall under tacho rules and required a tacho and for commercial use would require driver CPC. Dependant on the use of the horsebox again it could require a tacho and driver CPC if there is a form of payment for services i.e commercial use.

The rules on needing a C1+E licence for towing large trailers is also changing so that anyone will be able to tow a large trailer without a pre 97 licence with or without the 8250kg restriction code.

That’s my basic understanding based on info given so far.

I presume the have done the test to tow. A trailer/caravan or have grandfather rights

If have grandfather rights passed test before 97 o think. Should be ok upto 7.5t

Category BE
You can drive a vehicle with a MAM of 3,500kg with a trailer.

The size of the trailer depends on the BE ‘valid from’ date shown on your licence. If the date is:

before 19 January 2013, you can tow any size trailer
on or after 19 January 2013, you can tow a trailer with a MAM of up to 3,500kg

Cars

Category B - if you passed your test before 1 January 1997
You’re usually allowed to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8,250kg maximum authorised mass (MAM). View your driving licence information to check.

You’re also allowed to drive a minibus with a trailer over 750kg MAM.

Category B - if you passed your test on or after 1 January 1997
You can drive vehicles up to 3,500kg MAM with up to 8 passenger seats (with a trailer up to 750kg).

You can also tow heavier trailers if the total MAM of the vehicle and trailer is not more than 3,500kg.

You can drive motor tricycles with a power output higher than 15kW if you are over 21 years old.

Physically disabled drivers with provisional category B entitlement will also have provisional entitlement to ride category A1 or A motor tricycles.

Non-disabled drivers can no longer ride motor tricycles with a provisional category B licence.

Category B auto
You can drive a category B vehicle - but only an automatic one.

Category BE
You can drive a vehicle with a MAM of 3,500kg with a trailer.

The size of the trailer depends on the BE ‘valid from’ date shown on your licence. If the date is:

before 19 January 2013, you can tow any size trailer
on or after 19 January 2013, you can tow a trailer with a MAM of up to 3,500kg

gov.uk/driving-licence-categories

So it looks like a Category B is needed to tow a 3.5 tonne horsebox and 750kg trailer, or a Category BE to tow a 3.5 tonne horsebox and a 3.5 tonne trailer (or unlimited weight trailer if BE ‘valid from’ date before 19/1/2013.

I’d of thought this too ,certainly no dcpc needed though simcor .

Aye think I’m getting confused between categories of 3.5 ton and 7.5ton. oh well as I said I’ve never had any need to worry about what people can or can’t tow tbh.

B+E needed not C1+E

vehicle is a B as not over 3.5 tonnes
+E with that means trailer cannot be more than 3.5 tonnes
Everyone should have B+E after Nov 15th under the new Gov rules

If 3.5 horsebox has a max towing capacity of say 2000kg and caravan MTPLM (MAM) is say 1750 and GTW listed on vehicle is 5500kg then legally ok
