In aug 2013 I finally done my class 2 training and passed my test after 2 years of scrimping and saving every penny I could to get out of my dead end job.
What I didn’t realise was, that was all the easy part. Now came the hard part of finding a job. I had been to all of the local agencies within the first couple of days and had be turned down by around 5 of them due to lack of experience. And due to fitting it around my other job, I only got a couple of days work from the 1 agency that did give me a chance.
Any time I had off was spent sending CV’s, banging on doors and sending lots of emails, in total I gave 117 CV’s (including the emails) but guess what, not a signal reply until April 2014. It was a local company that I have known since I was born and so would most of you, the interview was made for later that day, they were aware that I had no experience but said they would get back to me either way.
The very next day I had a phone call offering me the job, I couldn’t believe it.
The following week I started my new job, the first 6 months were spent cab hopping until I got my own lorry after the fruit season had finished.
I got given the keys to this 2003 Mercedes and I was over the moon, no more cab hopping and was told it wouldn’t be used for the fruit in 2014, this made me even happier until last week I was called into the office and told it will be going after all so would mean cab hopping again, I was crushed. Until last night I was handed the keys to this 3 week old 26t Mercedes actros.
So that’s my story and I hope it shows new drivers that hard work, patience and lots of enthusiasm can pay off if you put your mind to it.
Drive safe and enjoy
