Some assurance for new drivers

Just wanted to write a positive post for new/wannabe class C drivers, I know I liked reading about other divers experience.

I passed my final module for class C on the 15th May  and sent off for my licence, digi card and DQC all the next day. Every last one came back 10 days later and I went to see a local agency the next day. Got a phone call today and have my first shift on Monday. It isn’t the greatest of jobs out there, it’s with p&h, but it’s experience and that’s all I really care about for now. I’ll always be freelance as that suits me, so I’ll always be open to other offers when they come around.

Good on ya pal.

I’ve done lots of similar jobs to P&H over the years and as you say " it’s experience " which is what it’s all about when you’re starting off in the game.

Good luck & keep us posted

If you stay freelance to begin with then you’ve a lot of savings !

As a new driver it’s not that easy an option.

I’d have stayed agency if it was steady when first passed. But little too sporadic.

Now I’ve time under belt maybe worth relooking so can save and get CE

Wouldn’t say I had lots of savings, in fact none. I do run a part time business and can drive for another member of the family, so for me freelance does work, appreciate that’s not for everyone. If the agency proves too sporadic that could be an issue for me, especially with baby number 2 due any day!

I did 12 months with P&H fella and its hard bloody work. But it gets you some good parking experience.

On the downside, it can get a bit frustrating when you are pulling your tripe out and the shop staff are just watching you.

Soon as you can,get your class 1. Then you will be a truck driver instead of a delivery boy.

Haha could do with losing a few pound to be honest, so should help. Out of interest, what is the going rate to get your class 1 nowadays?

I paid Peter Smythe £850 I think but I did have a voucher. The normal rate is £1350 which is pretty good considering the level of experienced staff they have. Not sure about other trainers on here but many speak highly of them.

The only reason to hire a driver is to deliver stuff. The least delivery a driver can do is on containers (apparently)!

Then again there is delivery, and then there is Delivery… I’m glad I do delivery :L

We charge £1350 but, as a Trucknet user, you get 10% off that. (Please mention when booking). That makes it £1215.

Choice of full size auto artics, auto w+d or manual w+d.

Note from my signature that we’re also the only DVSA Accredited LGV Training Centre between Luton and Carlisle.

If you’re more than 70 miles away, you also get free accommodation.

Of course, you can get it cheaper elsewhere. You can also spend a lot more.

Hope this helps, Pete
