Yeah that would probably work better
Its a serious question though although I probably shouldn’t use the word serious on here
We’ve just been issued with them, its a panic alarm that has gps data & is connected to a central monitoring station. If you were to be attacked you either pull the cord or press the button & the monitoring station can listen to whats going on & call police. If its put down & doesnt move for over 2 minutes it alerts the monitoring station, thats called man down. Just wondered if any other people use it

It sounds like a handy device to warn the guvnor you are having a crafty ten minutes kip on the bunk.
Russell.
We’re suppposed to be getting them for when we’re out in the yard downloading tachographs. That’s always a Saturday night job and there’s nobody else there.
I can see the thinking beind the alarms, but downloading a graph can take ten or fifteen minutes and I normally just sit in the truck with the radio on, so I don’t know if it’ll keep giving false ‘man down’ alarms
We’re trialing a few of these systems at the mo, only one I’ve tried is the LonerGPS which works just as you have described - it still relies on the person responsible for monitoring to have the balls to ring the emergency services rather than giving it 10 or 15 mins then ringing the boss at home to see what to do…
For those who think these are ott or a cab spy, trust me they are not - they only need switching on once you arrive on site. We deliver to unmanned sites thru the night often in remote areas and down in muddy unlit quarries where you could make all the noise you like and no-one would hear you. It only takes one slip to do yourself some harm and you could be left there for hours before someone realises you haven’t been in touch or returned to the yard - this kind of system should alert the need for help to be sent within minutes.
there is no way i would use one of these.
let’s say i press the button, then get out of the cab, and start laying into some scumbag ■■■■■ gits.
the police turn up to see me covered in blood, three of them on the ground, and me shouting “you can take my diesel, but you can’t take my winding handle”.
who will they arrest?
it’ll be me, it’s always me, it’s a [zb]ing occupational hazard.

i know. admitting to it is part of the therapy.
i have to sit on a chair, in a room of mirrors, and tell all the people my problems.

Well i had the chance to try this out today…lucky me
Got to work & was trying to switch it on, 30 seconds later my phone rings & its the monitoring station asking me if I was ok?. Didn’t even think it was on. Then after work I picked it up but dropped it on my lap & the thing started to vibrate. I thought I’d turn my phone of quick as I couln’t be bothered talking to the monitoring station. I tried turning the alarm off but couldn’t so got stressed with the thing & was shouting at it while trying to get to the battery. After about 30 seconds of me shouting I then remembered the monitoring station could actually hear everything i was saying
Told them it was a false alarm & then my boss rings up saying my alarm has been activated
Another driver had a call while driving on the motorway asking if he was ok, he hadn’t even touched his alarm.
I know they work as far as the monitoring station are on the ball ringing you straight away to check you are all right. On the other hand I can see them being really annoying if they go off easily. Thought they were a good idea at first but now I’m not so sure

I’m sold on the idea, i think its brilliant. According to the website it reduces staff stress, worries and anxieties of working alone. Makes the staff feel more ‘valued’ as a result. Do they ring you up every so often to make sure you’re ok? If so does it interfere with your driving answering their calls?

I’m not sure if there’s an element of sarcasm in that but no, the whole idea is that the office don’t have to ring you and it’s only switched on whilst working on site. Lone working with a pressurised bulk tanker has risks, even tho accidents may be rare they can happen and if they do there’s a major saftey and enviromental issue if there’s no help close by.
