Social life

It might be legal but is it moral to have a driver working a 15 hour day.How many teachers or librarians would do it?

I teach (privately) as well as drive wagons.

Tomorrow I start at 8am and finish at 10pm…and I am not required to take any rest at all as I’m self employed and can do what I like!

And yes, I’m teaching…Most teachers work about twice the hours they are paid for (the job has far more BS than driving, you can’t go for a ■■■■ these days without filling in a risk assessment form)…and teachers generally are more qualified than most drivers…though with the extra hours needed to do the job properly, don’t really earn much per hour more than drivers do…

I still agree though…it’s ridiculous the current system. Far too long a shift is fifteen hours.

work to live ,don’t live to work ,no rich men in cemetery ,i used to do 15 hour shifts regularly for stobarts ,the job was a piece of cake, the only job was keeping awake, miss driving but don’t miss the hours, the worst thing was having a 45 after being out for around 13 hours and driving the rest of the way back half asleep making scary mistakes.

I hope that ovlovjay you dont have any regrets later on in life that you only spend only 1 and 1/2 days a week with family it is not a criticism of yourself but so sad of how the industry now is withregards the example you have given.

My kids are young and are in bed by 7 Monday through Thursday. I’ve never had a day job where I get home before they went to bed, so i do the nights out which means I don’t have to work a Saturday or Sunday

Truckulent:
…I teach… (privately)

What do you teach though ?

OVLOV JAY:
I couldn’t do a shift like that. People knock tramping, “why do I want to sleep in a metal box when I’ve got a bed at home” but I think it’s the best work for me. I have two loads of washing, done by bed time Friday night and back in the bag, do my shopping on Sat mornings with the household weekly shop, off out in a min, then the rest of the weekend is spent with the kids

Agree with you definately is not moral at all good luck to all those that have to work 15 hours a day something which should be acted on within this industry weare now in the 21st century.Might be surprised though my partner is a teacher and 15 hour days are not at all uncommon in the profession arriving at school 7am for pre day planning etc then school day from 0845 til 1530 very time for break because due to staffing shortages/cuts have to cover pay time and dinner time subsequently their is after school clubs and other issues to take care off then come home marking books til 10 or 11 at night.

I used to be a teacher and confirm the above; I did far more 15+ hour days than I have as a driver. And most of it is unpaid overtime.

i’ve been driving 30+ years and never done a 15 hr shift, and hopefully never will.12 and a half spread-over when i started, that’s enough for anyone i would think.

2 of my mates have gone from zestys to 5’s and both impressed, but they ain’t cheap when you’ve spec’d them up!! i always buy last years model to save some brass. have you looked at any canyons? they’ll take some beating on the bang to buck ratio, but the downside is they’re mail order, so unless you find someone with one there’ll be no test ride :frowning:

I bought a Canyon Nerve AM 8.0X last year after the Norco I had got nicked. Great bike, and unbeatable spec for the money. Hasn’t let me down once. I usually ride Peaks around Edale, but have been to Wales and various trail centres. I was a bit nervous of the mail order side of things, but the service was first class and they now have a UK support centre you can email/call with any problems. I’d definitely recommend them. Usually have some cracking deals on their site too, and you benefit from the exchange rate if you buy at the right time.

that’s what i’d be going for if i was after a canyon, i already had my current bike when i first heard of canyons, but i’d be daft not to take a close look when i’m next in the market for a new steed.

stevieboy308:
are you not looking for a job on more normal hours if the current hours don’t suit?

Start doing that and you get shot down on here.
I’m not asking for much…Mon to Fri on days (Tipper sort of hours 6am till about 6/7pm)

yet to some people on here you’d think I was asking for the crown jewels.

Don’t even dare to ask for a social life!!!

The Nerve is a really good all-rounder. I’ve done simple XC trail centre stuff as well as rough stuff in the Peaks and it’s been comfortable with everything I’ve thrown at it. I really wanted a Strive as I thought it looked better and would be more suited to me stepping up to more all-mountain stuff, but the lead times on delivery were too long and I couldn’t wait as I was bike-less. They’re expanding their ranges all the time too, with 29ers and carbon frames now coming in. I’m in East Yorks, so if you ever see me at Dalby or you fancy a look at mine the next time you’re in the market for a new bike give me a shout!

i really like the look of the strives, but they’re just a bit overkill for what i normally do. how often are you at dalby? i used to go quite a bit but going to glentress and most other places took the shine off dalby for me and it’s been a while since i’ve been. but we’re on about going to scotland soon and i’m not bike fit, so could do with doing a few laps of the place to get me ready!

yeah, cheers fella i might take you up on the offer at some point!

you’re not a trucker unless you spend 3 weeks away in a truck n’all

I’ve not been up there for ages actually, I just thought you might if you’re from Scarborough. I’ve got an annual pass for Dalby, need some better weather to make more of it. I just prefer to ride natural stuff, and Dalby does get a bit boring - the red route is a proper slog and good for fitness though!

I want to do more in Scotland, I’ve only been up to Dalbeattie area. Want to get back over to Llandegla in Wales too, and gonna have a day at Antur Stiniog when the weather picks up - will probably tie that in with Llandegla actually and go camping. Roll on Spring!! :grimacing:

Thats a 10 hr day not 15 ?

Must admit, I don’t go out much, but when I do, I enjoy it more.
When I was out all the time, it got to the stage that I was’nt really enjoying it.
I go out a couple of times a month now, and I enjoy it more.

i’ve exactly the same view on dalby, i filmed the good bits at glentress red route and edited them together, it’s just shy of 20 minutes, i doubt dalby would get much over a minute!!

our next trip after the planned scotch one will be 2 or 3 days doing Llandegla and antur stiniog! we haven’t done either before but they look mint.

glentress and innerliethen are defiantly worth a look

Llandegla is a great trail, the B-line (you’ve probably seen the vids) is a right laugh. Antur looks proper good fun too. Bought a full-face helmet last year but ran out of holidays to actually get over there and try it out

Sorry for taking this off topic BTW
