Got pboro x2, kings Lynn, dereham, Norwich, Yarmouth. Currently at Toddington so gotta load at two sites am in Corby before that. It’s touch and go I’ll get off what they’ve given me let alone a backload that day.
So youve got 2 drops in Cambridgeshire and 4 drops round Norfolk then.
I volunteered to run back in on Saturday morning. Started at 01:00am, was in the car going home by 9am.
Usually if there was any work on the day we broke up for Christmas/New Year holiday it would be one early load of tarmac or stone and parked up before midday. However one year back in the 80’s it was actually Christmas eve and I was saddled with 20 tonnes of tarmac from near Ashbourne down to Crick Truckstop, older readers will remember that place! A Northampton firm were laying it, however the job entailed two of the gang standing on the load and chucking it into the vast numbers of potholes in the yard while I drove around, they were paying daywork so I wasn’t overly bothered. Got rid of about half the load and then; “We are off to the pub driver, see you in an hour” so head down and wait. Two hours later they returned and kicked in again, however they were all ‘well oiled’ and the roller driver actually fell off his machine which carried on going into the fence! Around 4pm and dark it came; “We are going home driver, get rid of the rest and Merry Christmas” so on Christmas eve I’m left with around five tonne of tarmac going solid rapidly.
I found an old abandoned quarry hole not too far away and ‘lost’ it in there but it was a late finish that day, I never made the same error again.
I also remember in the 70’s, when I worked in the garage for Tilcon, one New Years Eve myself and another fitter were laying under a Gardner engined Foden refitting the sump at 11.30 pm and hoping to get home to the pub 12 miles away to welcome in the New Year, needless to say I didn’t make it.
Pete.
