Dog clip is usually a secondary back-up there should be a spring loaded piece of metal that prevents the handle being slid forward to the release postion so no real dramas here TBH.
Might be company policy to use them not 100% on what current DVSA policy is on them think it used to be if fitted they liked to see them used but acceptable to not have a dog clip at all also as really with the design of a lot of fifth wheels it’s just a belt and braces thing.
If your talking about that bit that drops down that you have to lift when pulling the handle your talking tosh that’s only a addition on some fifth wheel systems. All our units are simple handle and dog clip.
OP. As been said,if you need a word drop it on the driver. If it becomes habit that’s different.

That specific secondary lock you describe is on a lot of Jost, probably one of the most common. There are other makes like Fontaine but they will still have a sping loaded secondary lock of some sort and not rely on the dog clip it’s mandatory that they do.
Main benefit of the the dog clip is probably preventing miscreants pulling the pin. I’ve seen some absurdly worn fifth wheels and I have never come across one behaving as Shep describes.

Is this a thing that happens? The kids at school used to hit the emergency door open on the buses (queueing in traffic), but I never saw more than that. I always think a good one to do (well, not good per se) would be to pull the trailer brake. Especially if it’s on the left underside…
Juddian:
My relation drives a foreign regd left ■■■■■■, recent fleet replacements have seen non greased teflon coated fifth wheels (new one on me, i’ll stick with a good old greasable Jost ta), also apparently without a suitable safety locking device, it appears that in the right circs when making a tight turn that the release handle can snag on part of the trailer which then proceeds to pull the handle out as the vehicle straightens, handy that…
progress
Poor maintenance to get as worn as the one described by Shep, you can feel the vehicle slew slightly side to side when going from power to overrun and vice versa when the fifth wheel wears.
Nothing new about them, I remember adverts for those things in truck magazines from when I was a child.
Juat a small word with the driver just say what you seen been everyone makes a mistake in life.If you go to the bosses it just opens a big can of worms.
m.a.n rules:
how do you know that he never unclipped it to test you.
I suppose he could be the Health & Safety version of the “mystery shopper”, sent in by the company to see if other drivers are doing their checks properly and also to see if they are complying with H&S rules and actively challenging unsafe/risky behaviour in the workplace. If he was, then the OP has sadly failed the test…
If a company employs such tactics to get drivers reporting on each other, then maybe it’s a good test to fail.
I’m dismayed by this kind of thing, people appear so keen to grass nowadays, I watched a video earlier of a bunch of ■■■■■■ up blokes having a punch up, it was being recorded from an upstairs window and the young girl with the camera was telling one of her mates to call the police. WTF?
Most of these dash or helmet cam videos attract lots of comments to report the subject of the video to the police, again WTF?
On a side note, I once refused to take a truck out for DPD on account of the dogclip failing to prevent the release handle from popping out (I always perform a ‘tug test’ to ensure the clip is doing its job). Like caveman says, I’d never forgive myself if something happened, knowing it was something I’d spotted on the walkaround.
You need to ask Knobroy bout this one, he is the know all of the forum and will gladly give you his correct version. Then to follow you will get the opinion of all his ■■■■■■■ who feel the need to support him in his ■■■■■■■■ self promoting posts.
The very fact that you have replied to my (very lazy) bait shows that a lack of intelligence is one. Add to that a pinch of poor mental discipline, and we have two.
I was going to say I am disappointed in your efforts, but that would not be true!!! Cheerio.

Sorry thicko but you was the one who took the bait, just waiting for your bf to find a layby now so he can add his own stupid comment much the same as yourself.
