So what was the outcome of the 40mph week in Dec?

Oh yeah thats right, nothing

Didn’t expect anything to happen anyway. Yes, the speed limits for HGVs on S/C roads needs looked at. But can you honestly see truckers making a difference. We have the power to make a difference to alot of things by our actions, but we just don’t stick together to make things happen.:frowning:

Can I be the first to mention the French :sunglasses:   …I’ll leave the Children for somebody else

So what’s the reason it needs to be looked at?
In reality probably the biggest majority of trucks already do 50+ on s/c roads so why would they consider changing it?
Like someone said we do not stick together.Maybe if we all obeyed the 40 limit all the time then they might do something as there would be even worse tailbacks than there are now but the way it is now they almost get what they want without changing it and also get the revenue from the ones they catch speeding.
How can they trust drivers to drive to the conditions on a s/c road? They will not do it now so you really think they are likely to increase the limit. Not a chance!

The debate became more of a two and fro’ over who does and doesn’t stick to 40 and the reasons why rather than whether 40 is correct on all A roads…which it isn’t. Rather than blanket all the single A roads with a 40 speed limit, I think it would be better to replace the signs where the police or highways have put HGV 40 signs up with HGV 50 signs as these HGV 40 signs like I’ve said, seem to be put up in places where they know the road is straight, wide and obviously safe enough to do 50. As well as looking at other roads. You couldn’t blanket all ‘A’ roads with a 50 for trucks. Some of them like the around the west country etc are fine at 40, I doubt you could make it up to 40 on some of them anyway !

But the limit is the MAX speed, doesn’t mean it’s safe. Surely as professional drivers, we know when it’s safe to go at the limit or not?? :grimacing:

BTW, I do 40 and am happy to do that, IMHO if the limit got increased, the planners would expect us to do the new speed, plan accordingly and people will go quicker than is sometimes safe due to scheduling times - see busses as an example

Most planners dont think about any speed limits or even hold ups (even in the usual places at certain times of day). In my experience the times given to drive to certain places hasn’t changed in years and years. A planner will say “It takes x amount of time to get from there to there”. The transport office where I am at the moment either guess or put it in google. Now I’m no computer buff but we all know there is no truck routing or timing for trucks on google.

Oh and don’t forget, the speed limit is the MAXIMUM speed in clear conditions. It is the MAXIMUM speed you can do not the speed you HAVE to do ! Don’t feel pressured by planners, my gripe with it being 40 is the to do with the safety aspect of going so slow when cars can do 60.

Think the speed difference is because a lorry doesn’t handle the same as a car and when loaded will need a little more room to stop. Oh and they are a bit wider  Just plod on driver…unless you carry body parts then the load isn’t urgent :unamused:

Borne out by the fact there are more and more HGV accidents on our motorways everyday, simple accidents like lorries going up embankments, down embankments, across central reservations and falling over.

We need to learn to drive safely at 56mph in one direction first :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh yeah thats right, nothing

it will never change the industry is full of limiter driving nutters who will never change.and companies who expect and condone them to do it in the name of cash end of

It was still the usual suspects doing 40mph in the week in december, mobile cameras were out in force that week aswell on the a9.
