To be fair I think Gormless is a fair description of a lot of drivers these days (yes myself included).
To just program a postcode into a satnav and blindly follow it come hell or high water shows such a lack of initiative that it beggers belief. I only do this when I know where im going and the satnav is used for arrival time and a ladies voice to chat up. Even trucknavs can make things worse by giving a false sense of security and their habit to use major roads to orbit the destination till a safe place to land is calculated.

Must admit, I know the way to most of my drops, just use the satnav as a safety barrier to know whether or not I need to get a break in on my way
There were far less problems when we used maps and asked directions.
Personally I have to agree about some being gormless.
Probably includes the ones that cannot read a map.
Why not use satnav (coupled with common sense)? A lot easier than the old days of carry a bag full of A to Z s. We adopt other technology to make our life easier so surely sat nav is no different.

what is this common sense you speak of?
just look at the new blood coming through (and I know some oldies are as bad) but on here this week we have had 1 guy asking if he is ok to work 15 hours every day, 1 asking if he can park on the hard shoulder to take a 45 as he didn’t realise services were not about and he had got to 4:29 driving time. plus a load more.
the dcpc has done wonders for the newbies coming through
A few bad apples etc.how many of us actually know somebody who has become stuck as a result of following a sat nav…exactly…none.it’s just over sensationalised bollox, dragged up by the media on an otherwise slow newsday.
aided and abetted by pompus pricks like liddle grainger(who has absolutley zero credability…considering his track record)the whole thing is blown up massively out of proportion.
and the plebs lap it up
And that goes for the daft questions sometimes asked on here.
Obvious wind ups.
NONE■■? Who are you kidding?
I am sure most know of someone and I am sure it has happened to a few on here even if they will not admit it.
What STUCK as in recovered?
I don’t…and i don’t know anybody that does.
You did not say stuck " as in recovered " in your post.

To possess common sense you need to have been born before 1970 and be able to read and write and speak fluent English

Ha ha you might be correct. Let’s face it a lot of drivers are gormless even before they try to use a sat nav.

It all seems to be down to a lack of planning and forethought i would rather take ten or fifteen mins to plan a route than blindly follow the sat nav. my first ever driving job was based in france/ and wider europe (1991 no sat nav) and i seemed to manage with just a michilen map if you got lost you had to figure out where you were and work around it
i still have my a2z collection although i dont haul it around with me sat navs are great bits of kit BUT IF IN DOUBT ASK use your common sense (which seems in short supply these days) keep your eyes open and your brain switched on these days with google smart phones etc etc
its not impossable delivery times are not DEADLINES they are GUIDELINES

If you don’t need recovering your not stuck.even the bloke who calls us gormless does’nt know any…that’s why he uses a bus and a car in his argument.
Nothing but a pompus tory nimby who does’nt want the likes of us on his land.

I wonder how transport ever existed before Sat Nav’s - you know load Amsterdam , tip Rome- go Swiss- that’s all the instruction we used to get… some how without a fake voice chirping at us we managed to find our way around, by looking at maps and stopping and asking folks- most estate agents would happily give away maps of the area- sorry if you cant find your way around without a sythentic voice telling you, then your probably in the wrong jobHave to kind of agree.
Tip here going to there bla bla bla. Unfortunately I have chucked old my old maps from years ago because I never thought I would get my licence back. Big mistake, yes they get updated but they have ur experience on them. Little makings of places etc.
Returning to driving casualy this month and the first thing I have bought is a map. Bridge heights etc.
Walked into many a local petrol station and I can tell they’re not (let’s say local) so I walk out till I find someone local.
It’s boils down too using your Loaf. (Brain)Meanwhile whilst you’re peeing half your daily duty/driving time away stopping every 5 minutes to get directions the bloke with the Satnav will have already got to the drop.
I think not dear boy. Don’t take long to find where to go. Not unless your a complete bifter.
As for the boy with the satnav, more chance of him being in a ditch or stuck under a bridge going by some pictures doing the rounds.
Worked for me for 6 years in the 90s when i had no electronic help and I am confident it will this time round.
I use a satnav.
I also use a map.
I also use my common sense.
I also remember the days of having to buy a little red a to z for every new area I went to and carrying a bag full of the
■■■■ ers.
Satnav is easier than trying to drive whilst holding a map and looking at it and the road and road signs at the same time.
Just because some drivers are thick as pig ■■■■ doesn’t mean we all are.
As a new driver (been at it a little over a year now) and young blood in the industry, I use sat nav, Google maps and maps.
Today for example, my sat nav was going to take me to the address on paperwork but it was a house, not what I wanted. So I used Google maps and found what I believed to be my delivery point. So I rang the company and confirmed it.
I marked down the place on my map book, jotted down the page in my black book and redirected my satnav. I also used my map book to figure out where I would be staying tonight but more importantly to check the route my satnav put on is suitable for my wagon.
99.9% of the places we deliver to are right in the sticks so I have to be on the ball if I’m going somewhere new.
It’s not hard really.

Looks like it.
