You can become a qualified plumber in a few weeks. Sticking together bits of pipe isn’t exactly rocket science. Like truck driving it takes longer to become what is deemed a competent plumber. The initial qualification for a lot of things isn’t what makes you skilled, its the overall skills required to do the job. You can learn pretty much everything there is in plumbing in a couple of years, try doing that in haulage.

Yes the license is one step up from driving a car but driving from A to B is just a small part of the job.

+1
Yep. Apart from the standard (and unnecessary) insult at the end, then this is a valid point.
Anytime someone tries to make our job sound more than a bit simple you get the usual howls of Its easy, anyone can do it,its nothing etc etc and is almost always met with comparisons of its nothing like plumbers and electricans.
Is plumbing a skilled job to be put on a pedestal? Joining pipes and crawling around in the dirt and enclosed spaces? Hardly. I installed my complete bathroom from scratch. Its not difficult.
Is electritian also some job to be in awe of? Ive installed extra plug sockets, spur sockets for cookers, light switches etc from scratch too. Its not exactly difficult either. You only need to know what your doing.
Same with joinery. Some feel its a job of the shining halo but again,I installed my complete kitchen in a little over a day and a half.
So while I agree that HGV driving isnt a very difficult job and it obviously does not require years of training, its hardly to be put in the shadow of other more “important” jobs

Spurring a few sockets does note make you an electrician, there is far more to electrical work than what you know in your house. For example cable sizing, fault protection, motors, pumps, controls, Plc, the list goes on and on.

Likewise fitting your bathroom is not everything your ever going to know about plumbing. You’ve got all the commercial side of things eg commercial boilers and water distribution.

So if if you think by fitting your bathroom and spurring some new sockets you know all about plumbing and electrics you are in cuckoo land!

Didnt say I knew it all. I said it wasnt difficult and didnt need to be put on some sort of pedestal as the pinnacle of highest skilled jobs. Anyone can learn to do it.
And in the same vein of thinking, just because someone can drive a car does not mean they can drive an hgv. And just because someone can drive an hgv does not mean they can haul anything.

Experienced drivers and lack of is the key! Agencies are struggling to get them because they want to pay “Experienced” the same as “Newbies” or EE straight off the ferries!
Thousands of experienced drivers jacked with the arrival of the Dcpc super trucker training courses! I didn’t see many Agencies funding their Dcpc upto last September or since, payback is a ■■■■■ isn’t it! lol

To me, driving is what I want to do. I do not care if it’s skilled or unskilled. As long as I enjoy myself, and get paid enough to cover my bills and have a bit to spend, I am a happy chappy.

BillyHunt:
When it comes to this job I don’t really give one what others think of it, or me, or my driving style, or pretty much anything to do with it really. I’m in a job I like, getting paid what I consider enough for me & no matter what I do or say to anyone about it that won’t change. I can’t change anyone’s perception of me or the job or the truck or the employer so why waste time bothering or worrying about it.
Turn up on time, do the job to the best of your ability, go home, get paid. End of.
I remember reading about an actor, Lee Marvin I think, when making a film a new actor asked him " what’s my motivation for this scene?" He replied “Thursday” , "“why Thursday” asked the new guy, “because that’s payday” was the reply. That’s work, any work, in a nutshell, I don’t know anyone that goes in for nothing no matter how much you enjoy it.

Well said that man.

I quite like annoying the public anyway, perk of the job

Fair comment. Im happy with a normal trailer behind me and really happy with slightly shorter bulk trailers. When i have done flat beds with a foot either side of over hang the whole trip is a stress. I never like the look of the lorries with caravans on the beds as im assuming alot of the sites they go to are down potentially small roads in the countryside where the caravan is brushing against bushes either side of the road.

As my company does low loaders, heavy haulage, plant hire etc im sure i will give it a go at some point but for now i will stick on the easy bulk haulage work.

Spurring a few sockets is not that difficult I will agree.

Not everyone can be an electrician you are wrong, there is a lot of maths involved and if you are thick then you ain’t going to cut it.

Likewise not everyone can be a trucker, some people are never going to get it.

It’s always going to be easier to be a trucker than an electrical engineer that’s a fact.

Anyone can do a 5 week course to become qualified as an electrician or plumber but at the end of they will be nowhere near the finished article.

Whereas you can do a week course to become a lorry driver . And after a week or two out on your own you should be reasonably proficient as a driver.

HGV driving isn’t hard.HGV jobs are though.work that out tony Blair before you sell our lives to Warsaw.sick of having to run bent to keep a cranky job

Electrical engineers are no more talented than mechanical engineers.I have done both and never got up at 1/am for a 15 hour shift whilst being liable for 700 pound in fines.if you break health and safety you get fired not promoted .I’ve done both .electrical engineers get toilets breaks workers rights colleagues.no contest

Agencies don’t want experienced drivers .they want yes men to pay pensions for the army of unskilled that think HGV is an easy job.you know what there’s the keys.oh u can’t do it as well as I can push a pen .better get a secondary workforce who are less interested in a career than paying rent.and cannot refuse to break rules and regs

How is it to be a top class driver? Do you have good tips for us? :sunglasses:

I don’t realy care what people think of my job it pays the bills I like driving round doing sod all other than listen to the radio all day.
I don’t realy care about anyone else’s job as long as there happy at it what’s to worry about.

Trickle down effect of the war Robbie.and mass migration.the boys in the Monday club won’t have been affected but when you drive past the foodbanks you’ll get my gist.sold the kids and the country for a hot tub they did

I get paid to drive bands/artists/groups/shows etc around the country. Get to meet the bands, watch the shows, when possible go out for drinks with them, see pretty much every place in the UK (although there’s some id rather not go back to again!)

Quite a few people I know envy me. It’s hard work, but a great industry to work in.

It’s the entertainment industry! When it stops being entertaining, get the F out!
