So close yet so far

Any new driver should know that getting that all important first start will be difficult and if you don’t then personally I don think you’ve done enough research.

I’ve been phoning up local companies today each of them saying no jobs until I try Yuill & Dodds. I asked the fella if he’s looking for any class 2 drivers, he asks me what experience I’ve got, I tell him nothing I’m afraid but I’m a very quick learner and very eager, he says ok and then asks how long I’ve had my license, I tell him a month and he says ok after a short pause, he then asks how old I am and I tell him 18 and he says ah I was hoping you’d say 21 son, can’t do anything for you. Okay I say, and thanks…

BOOM. So close yet so far, the no experience and license held period wasn’t an issue just my age. Unfortunate to have come close but I fully understand why, pick myself up and try again.

Unlucky there Sam, no doubt it will be an insurance thing, but your age certainly doesn’t help in the fact that youv’e really only got about a years driving experience, if you’d been 21 with 4 years no claims you’d have been in. :frowning:

Yeah definitely, I can’t fault them really. It’s a bit hypocritical but I wouldn’t let an 18 year old drive my wagon

Sam, give Iain Watt Haulage in New ■■■■■■■ a call.

I haven’t spoken to Iain for a while so I’ve no idea whether he has any jobs going at the moment, but he put a couple of 18 year olds in 8-wheel tippers back in the days of the Young Drivers Scheme, and I know his own son recently started driving for him at 18 so it might be worth a call, even if you only get the odd weekend shift out of it.

Also they have a sister company (Duncan Plant Hire) which is owned by his father-in-law, they run fast-tracs and volumetric mixers (along with lots of plant and a couple of artics), they might be able to give you something and even though it might not be what you are looking for it is still work and experience.

I thought you had a job lined up?

Tried Iain Watt, cracking fleet of motors they have. The lady that answered the call took my details  Cheers.

Can’t recall myself saying I did, I did have a good chance with Bowie however they’re only taking on Class 1 driver at the moment.

Sam,

Oh eck, sounds like you were nearly in there mate. :frowning:

I know you will keep trying so i just wanted to send you a word of encouragement.

Its a pleasure to know of somebody who wants to work and who is actually doing something about it. Good on you pal!

Why cant some more young people get off their backsides in the way that you have done?

I dont expect you to answer that 'cos I dont suppose you know. You dont think like them.

I wonder, is there any chance of you getting a start as a driver’s mate or as an apprentice HGV fitter or something like it somewhere? I think I remember one of your posts suggested you have family connections in the industry?

Anyway, good luck with the search. I KNOW YOU WILL GET A START somewhere and soon!!

Cheers,

LandyLad

Ahh I get you. My mate is just starting with them me thinks. Sod only had his licence about a week.

I’m not actually joking when I say this but I just tried every single number in the Yell book for Haulage Companies in my area within 50 miles. The ones that are employing are looking for Class 1 drivers and even then I think there was, 2 companies. All the rest are simply not looking at all, nothing about no experience or age just simply not taking on.

It’s a sad world, not sure what to do anymore if i’ve tried everyone in the book.

Hello sam
Just keep going mate dont give up even if it means re-locating getting that 1 st real break is the hard part
but when you get it Boy does it feel good

Same here. Got a load of business cards done as well as a load of copies of my licence and associated cards (probably a bit overkill, but then they have all they need then). Just need to pluck up the courage to do some cold calling.

I could always try the business card bit, what have you got on your mate?

Will keep trying animal as always but relocating is a bit out of the question just now unfortunately as others suggested. :frowning:

Landylad, sam aint the only kid on here that worked their nut off to pay for their license and get a job… Opps did I say that out loud.

Just got full name, licence type and any relevant qualifications like cpc, adr etc, contact numbers, address and email address on there. Got them from vistaprint, they’re free ish (just got to pay postage of £3.50) for 250 cards. Going to keep some in my wallet just in case - theory is if you give someone a card they’re more likely to remember to call if they have anything.

Hiya Sam

Keep going matey I know it ■■■■■ but your persevering will pay off eventually keep going into same companies as well they will realise your serious about finding work and will admire you for not giving up just pop in and say I know you said nothing going but was just passing and wondered if owt had changed you never know I hope you find somat soon

Animal good luck with your search too hope somat turns up

Fingers crossed fer ya both

Hiya Saaamon,
