Snow

Manual petrol engined, small cars are the best in the snow, especially with narrow tyres. And the more gutless the car the better as less chance of wheelspin.

I imagine mine will be awful, diesel grunt and wide tyres and low profile and 18" alloys makes for a bad combo for getting going if you have stop. Getting up hills is fine as long as you can get a decent run up and keep it moving, just a shame people coming down the hill don’t allow you to make it up and barrel down often In their SUV or 4x4.

Got out fine in mine but coming back trying to turn into the car park and get up the very slight incline and over speed humps was fun.

Had to take a run up the incline on the road and slide it around into driveway to get into the car park. No traction at all on slight incline with snow slush and or ice. Then got stuck in the car park again, forwards and backwards no revs and clutch control only and just going nowhere. So take a run up again and steering for the slightest bit of traction and wheel spin to get past the parking space and reverse in.

All that effort to park up. It’s not even that bad weather wise, just a combo of car, diesel, tyres and inclines and it wants to go pretty much nowhere.

Ford Focus, all season tyres, not a problem at all.

Ain’t what you drive its the tyres you’ve got on.

All media hype again , you would of thought listening to the forecast yesterday that certain places the world was gonna end ,
Schools closed for snow for gods sake , there a war in Ukraine and they seem to be coping better than us with a few cm of sleet

A few cms of snow , looks more than that on that car roof , I’d guess 6 inches

If a cop saw that car with 6 inches of snow he/she would pull them over straight away and give them a ticket for it. And they would have to clear it off the roof before continuing.

It always makes me frown when people bother to clear their window and leave a hat of snow on the car. Sweep it off for goodness sakes lazy sods.

Instead of showering cars behind you in snow and ice, not to mention dropping it all over the roads.

Need’s some police on the road to actually police it as usual.

Agree, but on the back of a ■■■ packet 6 inches of snow on the roof of a car weighs around 150kg. 6 inches of snow on the top of a 13.6 m trailer weighs around 1.6 tonnes.

No doubt they will come up with a special camera just for this :unamused:

So I went over the A66 last night. Looking at how deep the piles of snow were at the side of the road that the ploughs made when clearing it I’m struggling to understand why it was closed. Bearing in mind there was no traffic over it all night and the snow piled up at the side of the road is basically what was covering the whole road when the ploughs went over it was piled up maybe 6 inches to a foot for almost all of it in both directions. It was only where they’d cleared road entrances and driveways to the farms there were any notable piles.

I’ve been going over there for most of the last 9 years on nights and what I saw piled up was nothing unusual for the nights they’ve kept it open with ploughs running.

To me it looks like the Highways Agency decided they could use the yellow warning as an excuse to save a few bob at the expense of everyone who ended up adding 40-120 miles to their journeys, those who were wanting Penrith being the furthest. I wonder how many of those stuck overnight on the M62 were there because the A66 was shut?
