snow has melt

Most of the snow melt from Tampere week or two ago and last snow pile I was seeing from my window melt two days ago so I think now is appropiate time to post some winter pictures (with some trucks of course). Now there is still some (10 to 50cm deep) snow in northern Finland, especially in the woods, and from these links you might still be able to see some snow (road administrations weather cameras).

Scenery was very beatiful just before Christmas. Regrettably I don’t have any picture taken above forest where best scenery was so I post best shot I have, altough this small picutre size flattens the experience little bit.

At the next two weeks (after Christmas) I worked few days and most of these pictures are from that period.

Few days after Christmas I stopped for a lunch near Tampere and I spotted this FH12 6x4 which has very unusual driveline for an artic in a general haulage.

Just an ordinary picture from that days weather, about -10C to -15C and suprisingly slippery as moisture had frozen to road surface, just like it had frozen to the trees in first picture. About 60 km further south a rigid training vehicle driving reasonably far behind me almost collided to my trailer as car driving in front of me stopped to wait for a gap in traffic to turn left over the road. Car driver put indicator on early enough for me to safely reduce speed but trainee in a rigid vehicle probably didn’t notice I was slowing down. After his vehicle had stopped it was really close to mine and when we got moving again he at least doubled distance between us.

Earlier at the same day little bit north from Tampere I was wondering why every car was overtaking me, but I had forgotten that some parts of this road aren’t affected by general 80 km/h winter speed limit. So they just keep driving 100+ km/h despite the weather

Week later almost at the same place but now there is salt on the road. Note young trees leaning on the elk barrier because of the weight of the wet snow.

At Varkaus paper mills I spotted this Iveco which might look familiar, as I’ve posted picture of it once earlier.

Here I’m doing a collection from a farm. Note snow in left end of front bumper. I had to pull my way from main road to this farm across a snow bank left by snow plough, which wasn’t the problem but I almost got stuck to that snow bank when was doing 120 degree turn over it to get back to main road :stuck_out_tongue:

Quite basic FH12 equipped with swap body and 5 axle a-frame drawbar trailer has just left terminal. Truck is owned by Schenker, which is on of the three big owners of Finnish logistics company Kiitolinja.

FL12 owned by another big Finnish logistics company. This truck is also equipped with swap body but is hauling 2 axle semitrailer with special dolly trailer. In this picture truck is clearly running empty, propably heading to do a collection so that another driver can do trunk run at night and at some point swap bodies and trailers with ones another truck brings from elsewhere and head back to home. Picture is taken at March 20. just before I accidentally drop my camera, which of course broke, and since it’s been in repair, mostly waiting for parts to arrive.

Lonely Volvo.

Sun is shining nicely, I’ve collected load and have just drank coffee in a small cafe just outside this picture. Now I only have to avoid frostbites when stepping out from the cab as air is quite freshening (-23C). Fumes you see are coming from webasto which is warming water in boxes underfloor heating.

Riding to sunset with my reliable horse like in every Lucky Luke comic book :sunglasses:

great pics as usual kyrbo

Once again some great pictures - thanks for posting them.

You seem to have a knack of making me forget that outside of the cab … it’s bloody freezing!!! :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Lovely pics, the air looks nice and crisp and fresh.

I see the Schenker FH12 has the old style logo which was used by Scansped, before they were swallowed by BTL and then Schenker,is it still widely in use in Finland?

Brilliant and interesting photos as usual Kyrbo, thanks for putting them up.

Nice pics Kyrbo, one of my regrets is that I haven’t been to Finland and those pics make me wish for a trip there even more.

Yes, that style of logo is still used by Kiitolinja in Finland. I don’t know why that logo is used, but I have few speculations now after I’ve done little digging (reading history pages of Kiitolinja and their subbies).

Speditor bought majority of Kiitolinja’s shares at late 80’s and now Schenker holds those shares. Those shares were probably owned by family of Kiitolinja’s founder, but subbies had still some part of shares so complete merge wasn’t possible (I think something like this happened but real situation could have been different). Earlier at same year, before Speditor had bought shares, Kiitolinja had started “marketing alliance” to help biggest subbies and Speditor’s logo (Scansped) was quite logical to take at that time. I think the main reasons why old style logo is still used is that Kiitolinja has long traditions and is very strong brand in Finnish domestic haulage so there isn’t much of idea to change logo just after old one has came familiar. Also two big family owned subbies probably like more if they don’t see logo of an big international company on every of their trucks and trailers.

There was three big family companies subbying to Kiitolinja at 90’s who practically took care of all Kiitolinja’s freight. Schenker didn’t really kick into that side of busines earlier than 2002 when one of those three went bankruptcy and Schenker acquired their trucks and business. Now Schenker owned company takes care of Kiitolinja’s freight in south and western Finland, and in their own trailers and swap bodies is often also Schenker’s own logo and name besides Kiitolinja’s logo. If you look the box and trailer on red Volvo you can faintly see it in lower rear corner, covered by dirt.

This sound’s little like situation you were yourself if I remember correctly. You had Edwards logistics truck and trailer altought it was Willy Betz owned company.

You still have your truck  I bet that Allport has some freight every now and then to even here so why not ask for such?

Regrettably there isn’t much change of snow in next six months, even in Lappland last bit snow is likely to melt during this week

thanks for posting the pics kyrbo. Always interesting for me.

Well it looks like summer is already over in northern Finland. :stuck_out_tongue: This year summer last about two weeks (well, at least temperature raised above +10C every day :stuck_out_tongue:) and now winter is already coming back. Picture taken in northern Finland yesterday (15th May), not by me but some guy who was going fishing and road to the lake had get little bit of snow during previous day/night (that guy told he had already changed summer tyres to his car)

Also, sorry for posting this post. I don’t have any real desire to “show off” with our climate but I just couldn’t resist to post this after having couple beers  Maybe it’s better for me to go now before I start writing even more.

Kyrbo. The only time I write is when I have had a few beers!!
