Carryfast we are talking in general nothing to do with the OP.
SiAmon:
Why not ask ourselves a few rhetorical questions here.
- Was it traffic using lane 1 which kept it open?
2 If the answer to Q1 is yes, would traffic using lane 2 also keep that lane open?- Would 2 lanes moving allow a greater separation between vehicles?
- Finally, is it Robroy using lane 2 which has ruffled some feathers, or the passing other vehicles?
I’ve often used lane 2, if there’s a light snow covering, and the lemmings are all following tail lights in lane 1. Sometimes only driving a few mph faster than lane 1, but with a clear road in front, and no plonker sitting behind, waiting for an opportunity to reprofile my rear crumple zones.
^^^^This
but then we do live in the Arctic North so know how to drive in snow
unlike the deft people of the south as they never get it
On sat 12th it was light wet snow really only coloured water nothing more there was all of 2" ( ok up on the hill in Consett might of being a little more ) at most on the path & gardens ok it fell quite quick but no sooner was here than it was gone defo by sun morning as it went back to rain on the sat
The graters came out went round all that was left was wet roads didn’t even freeze so no icy
Dolph:
Some of you talk about anti skid training, in other threads I have read that drivers in UK pass their test and did their training on automatics with backup cameras. Don’t want to sound rude, but what the hell, you expect this drivers to have professionals skills when they get a DL like that ,on autos+cameras.
Auto yep can pass test in but no back up camera
I always drive in the lane with the most snow and all the other drivers love. But I do drive a gritter
What’s all this declutching cobblers, most of us have been issued with and now probably stuck with forever unfit for purpose automated manuals, short of slipping the thing into neutral what we s’posed to do?..hang on while i correct a full sideways slide with me right mitt and fiddle about down on the floor near the idiotically placed parking brake in me MAN with me left mitt to find the gearswitch lads, gunna end up spilling me coffee and have to put the phone down to do all that…

I really cant believe the replies in favour of this supposed to be professional drivers actions.I can’t believe you are a holder of C licence, or may be you are a summer-weekend driver.
how dose , been driving class 1.(as it was called then) since 1975. 23 years of that on petrol tankers.
can you believe it now. ■■?
ask the op , or yourself, big trucker would he or you done the same thing if there was a police car in the queue.
■■■■ right u, he would not.
dolph, you check my status on here, ive been here since 2005 with very few posts, im more of a lurker, but this post has really boiled my ■■■■. one reason is my granddaughter (18) is sitting her driving test in jan. and I have been in the situation of having a prick of a lorry driver doing the same as the op, while in my car, and it is not nice. how lorry drivers think it is ok to cover cars with slush/snow is beyond me.
as I say would he of done it with a cop car ?.no cos he would of been charged with. driving without due care and consideration, and if he had caused accident he would have had the book thrown at him,(see how old am). and what if he jacknifed and killed someone ? for what.? how many SECONDS did he save . in my OPINION the op is a prick, and he knows it, that’s why hese on here looking for support.
Police car or not I’d have overtaken the lot ,just because it’s says police on means sod all ,they’re all sheep like Albion says .

As I have said it it was like it was on saturday I would have as would mean that both lanes open instead of 1 easier in the long run for all & as said it was gone very soon after due to the graters & the rain came less than 2" of very soft snow ( seen worse rain & people not slowing down like that & all in same lane )
I was riding my motorbike in the winter of 80-84 in a lot worse than saturday if you remember that dug self out of the street

To be fair that’s more likely to be a nice sure footed 6x4 rigid not an artic.

if you want to keep lane two open and be a ‘good citicen’ fine sit in lane two at the same speed as other traffic,no prob. but to charge down lane two, covering car drivers in slush/snow is just 'LOOK AT ME, IM A BIG TRUCKER, YOUR A BUNCH OF ■■■■■■■. ■■■ prick…
Think you will find he was driving not much faster than they were a mile or two more not a lot
But if lane 1 is doing 40mph ( for argument sake ) Then I go into lane 2 & drive at 43 I will be going past you but not much more still safe to do so keeping both lanes open
robroy:
Came back over Shap today, I reckon the snow must have been a surprise as it looked like it had not been gritted or prepared for, it just came down real fast, all at once, and it was down to one lane.Anyway there was a big procession of cars in lane 1 sat at 35 to 40 mph]sounds like a reasnoble speed in snow and thought [zb]yes, that says it all. slush fountain on their bonnets prick not to mention at least 3 coffee shaker gestures.possibly more like all of them.
In my mirror I had about 4 other trucks eventually pull out and follow me.]another 4 dicks[/color]
I still say I was doing nothing wrong (but this post might be one of those where you don’t get the reaction you expect
)so if I get stick for being an irresponsible bad driver…hey, I’m a big lad , I can take it
so bring it on.
… I won’t mince off in a strop.
btw, Not trying to be a hero at all either, it was hardly ‘Ice road truckers’
Who else would pull out, and who disagrees?
I disagree, I think your a ■■■■.
but as you say your a big lad, you can take it. ■■■■
jackslad:
Ya did right robroy pulling out and using that lane, its the best way to keep lanes open,i know you said it wasn’t gritted, but if it was then it needs traffic to make the grit work.you were only doin what the traffic womble should have been doin.
■■■■ off - and put a tax payers vehicle at risk we’re only in a 4x4 not a ■■■■ off LGV! - say something had happened - professional drivers like yourself would say, “What did he think he was doing?” get a ■■■■■■■ grip - pleb!!! damned if we do, damned if we don’t! and for your information, it was gritted, the snow came down faster than the lads could clear it. There are only so many gritters/ploughs available not one for every mile.
The graters need cars /lorry etc to follow so the grit can work on the roads & melt the snow simple so need vehicles in all lanes
animal:
Think you will find he was driving not much faster than they were a mile or two more not a lothe made a judgement and thought ‘■■■■ THEM ALL’ and passed at 50 mph.
check his post

but not at 50mph covering cars in slush and snow .
I just cannot see how you are trying to defend his driving
have you never been in the receiving end off this ?

Der - he specifically stated the cars were doing 35-40mph and he passed the lot of them at 50mph…

Jeez you really are an obnoxious little man aren’t you.
Why come on here so hostile?
You can call me what you like mate, all you are doing is showing yourself up by displaying your inability to have a grown up debate, drawing attention to your lack of vocabulary, not to mention your difficulty with the English language in general.
To answer your badly made points.
Firstly I did not start this thread ‘looking for support’ anybody on here will tell you that is not my way, I merely came on asking who would or would not have done the same.
I have never cared a jot if anybody on here agrees with me or not, if I think I’m right I’ll argue, if I’m proven wrong I will apologise and have done on here on quite a number of occasions.
To get back to the thread subject, I made a judgement and stuck to it, I thought the cars in lane 1 were being too over cautious, by driving on a thin layer of snow in a soaken wet road, in fact as if they were driving on packed snow and/or ice.
I did not tearsrse through on and beyond the limiter, it was a max 50, and at an estimate a 10mph or so differential. It was nothing to do with ‘saving seconds’ I drove to what I considered appropriate to conditions.
The slush was an indication how wet the snow was.
What about when the rain is torrential with puddles on the M.way, do you as a driver of 40yrs think, ‘Hang on I won’t overtake these cars, think of the amount of water on their cars’’ I would like to bet not.
If a Police car had been in the line, (which I doubt anyway due to the SAID condition of the road) I certainly WOULD have carried on (despite your opinionated presumptions) there was no need not to, the Police car would more than likely be in front leading me or sat behind.imo. again not arctic conditions, wet snow/slush.
You were not there mate, I was, … I still say it was safe.
Had the conditions been much worse I would have been sat behind the cars at a safe distance, as I have said on past posts in this thread.
You mention your granddaughter, I too have an 18 yr old daughter, I would never, and never have driven in a manner to bully, harass, push, or unnerve any road user.
Hope that answers your points.
It would be much easier for me to drop down to your level and call you names, but I think one of us at least should try and be grown up.
So if you want to know anything else mate, just ask me…, but this time try and construct a sentence without personal attacks or insults.
Apart from the fact they would never hit the spot with me anyway, it makes for a more adult conversation.
