A set of snow chains would be handy this time of year.what a shame companys havent caught on in the uk to give us truckers them so if we got stuck on a silly wee hill we can get our wagon moving and get our jobs done.

Btw is 300 a lot it? seems a lot to me
Here we just keep a short length of chain in the cab, a couple of feet long, to chuck under a drive wheel (difflock on) to get going.
Once you are on a fresh piece of ice there usually isn’t a problem, as your tyres will have cooled down enough so you won’t melt in again while you recover your chain.
True show chains are only used by logging trucks and farm deliveries, and then only in extremis.
I’d say all you really need in the UK are proper winter tyres

So what do you do wrap it round the tyre or lay it on the ground?
I was thinking of making a homemade tyre sock, bit of old carpet the length of a tyre then strap it, the last 2 days i probably shovel about 2 ton worth of snow, its starting to get on my nerves. I knocked 2 bags of salt which kept me moving this afternoon. Its not the roads that are the problem i plan myself away from all the carry on, its the drops which are a nightmare.

Hold one end, and swing it hard so that the other end wedges in a line in the angle between the tyres and the ice or snow. It takes a bit of practice.
It sometimes helps to start freeing yourself in a backwards direction as the treads on the tyres are often a bit sharper on the rear side - especially if you’ve been wheelspinning a lot
By the way that video is an avert for proper snow tyres, NOT chains. That sort of slush wouldn’t even slow down the Micra-driving, elderly flowery hat ladies here (and I’m NOT kidding).
Snow chains
You’ve obviously never had to use a set in anger then, no one in their right mind would ever voluntarily use snow chains, they are [zb] hard work and you freeze your ■■■■ off while you’re putting them on, then they come loose every 5mins and you have to do it all again, then they break and rip your mudgauards and back lights off, then after you’ve taken 2hrs to do 15miles a snow plough comes past you as you’re taking them off

Don’t put them off Mark
The countries at a standstill as it is can you imagine if everyone had to chain up FFS it would be April before we got going again.
I was gonna take a set to Invergordon on Sunday but chose a trip to Brighton instead. I’ve become a puff

It’s like any other job,it gets easier with practice.
And if you are somewhere where you don’t want to be and it’s the only way out?
Ian and gb1, you’ve no choice in that matter, or when you’re going over mountains, I have a full set, two doubles and four singles, I have enough for my rear drive axle, front axle and one trailer axle, they have to be carried to meet the law in the Western States, Callifornia in particular, but they’re to be used to get out of trouble, not to get into trouble, so if I get stuck, well I have no choice, but I wouldn’t put them on to do a full day’s driving, if it’s that bad then it’s time to wait for the snow ploughs. A bit different in your M/E days Ian, but Windy Hill and Bolu don’t have much in common, well apart from lots of muslims
In the past when I have got stuck I just used old rope to make a snow chain (ok Snow rope) it got me out of trouble and I didn’t need to stop to take it off when the road got better because it had fallen to bits by then and dropped off by itself.
But to put real snow chains on…I don’t think so, not while I’ve got snow curtains I won’t
Hi all.GB1 where did you take the picture as i see you have ice chains on,not snow chains.i spent from2000 until 2008 driving every winter fron holland to tromso for pilkington so i had many happy hours days, fitting and driving with chains on due to the fact that i had only a single axle unit.i became almost a sort of mascot to the norwegian drivers as they used to love coming past me on hills[without chains, while i was fitting mine]and then waiting at the top with a cup of coffee and a big grin.they wern’t sure if i was one can short of a six pack,or merely masochistic to be doing the job this way.2 axle units being company policy.take care mike

Hiya Hutpik. The picture was taken on 23rd December last year at Andalo, Italy, at a ski resort just north of Trento. What on earth made anyone think that was a good place to have a gig at i’ll never know!
Must confess I did’nt know that you could get ice OR snow chains. I’ve had those for over 25years, and they’ve served me well. Guess the studs on the chain will be the difference between the two types.
The company i’m with now supply us with 7 sets per truck/trailer, although as I pointed out to them - by the time i’ve fitted them all, it would be summer again anyway!
I’d agree that its far more preferable to pull the curtains, but sometimes you’ve just got to get going.
When its time to put snow chains on its time to draw the curtains.
