the toxins in the nicotine stay in the fabric in the truck for up to 6 months if not properley cleaned off, roof lining, curtains, and bunk cover, the toxins are also proven to cause severe damage to the lungs over time, this is a medical fact, so even if you drive the same truck all the time, when you take your holidays another driver has to use your vehicle, if he is a non smoker this could create a problem for the smoker with his boss, at the end of the day the law says no sparking up in the work place, and it is also company policy wether you agree or not, ask yourself this, would you spend all day at home smoking in your babies or childs bedroom, and then put them to bed in the same room at night to sleep, and before you ask 60 marlboro red a day thanks, be considerate boys.

Does your vehicle run on diesel?

Smoking doesnt just leve a horrible smell, it coats the inside of the truck wtih a sticky layer of tar, witch can cause problems with electrics aswell as it coats the contacts on switches and causes them to stop working aswell as genrally making the cab a horrible place to be as everythings sticks and muckyThat’ll be why my tachograph periodically stops working.
There should be a like button for some posts!!
Marvellous site this so much good info.My Magnum is just over 6 years old and I now find out it’s my 60 a day ciggy tar which is holding it all together, cheers lads.

I suppose the moral of the story here is that if you get given a smoker’s truck to drive you should try to refrain from sucking the roof lining or chewing the curtains and bunk cover.

You’ve obviously never serviced elctrical items in pubs before the smoking ban came into force then…
Good to see the … are being thought of on this thread.
It’s perfectly possible to smoke in a cab without it becoming covered in tar and stinky.
Open the window a little before lighting up, use the open window as an ashtray and the inside
will not smell of smoke when you have finished.
A cold day, I suppose, for the 60 a day driver but a better place to sleep in.
Most of the really vile cabs I have been in have been due to the driver’s lack of personal
hygiene and an inability to clean anything, regardless of whether or not he smoked.
Regards,
Nick.

Back in the 1980s I worked as an amusement machine service engineer and would regularly service and repair AWP and pinball machines in pubs, and I never once had to repair one which had malfunctioned because of people smoking.

Thats interesting. I’ve reguarly had to strip down and clean/rebuild the various tape/CD players in the pubs/clubs I worked in. The crap that came off the mechanism was unbelievable, particuarly the sliding shaft mechs on tape decks, sticky muck most of it. Why haven’t I had this muck with any other device that isn’t subject to the same conditions as in a club, well the only difference I can come up with was the smokey atmosphere.
As for smoking in the cab, I’m not, and never have been smoker. Under the current rules, and our company is very hot on it, if anyone smokes in the cab they are subject to immediate disciplinary action. I hate getting into a stinking cab, for any reason, but smoke smell is the worst.
When I worked for Scania I used to see lots of air filters burnt out on the 3 series after some smoker had chucked his knubend out the window and it got sucked in.
Please note I said knubend and sucked not knobend and sucked, not to be confused with each other!!

Food grease? The stuff they replaced dry ice with? Spilled alcohol?
We have a good system at our place, if we go on holiday and return to a dirty, smoke filled cab, it is valeted at the dirty, filthy smokers expense, and we’ve had letters to this effect!
this is what happens if you smoke in your cab.

and the truck i drive right now is a non smokers truck and the electrics have a tizzy fit all the time yet trucks ive driven in the past which have been smoked in work fine, so really smoking plays nothing into it.
