Hi Guys
Has anyone out there come across Smith Training (an American outfit) who deliver driver retraining? They are coming for our next CPC module - looked at their website but obviously they don’t reveal all on the two minute introduction!
TIA

Yes, we did the Smith System training as a CPC module a couple of years ago (although ours was delivered by our own in-house trainers). Unlike just about anything else I’ve done for CPC training, I actually found it both interesting and useful. There’s nothing revolutionary about it (especially if you’ve already done any sort of advanced driver training).
It was also not just classroom based - we went out in groups in a people carrier type vehicle to put the theory into practice.

DHL use it and have put most of their drivers through it,it’s a day off from real work.
Like metioned above it gets you out of the classroom, which is handy instead of listening to someone who loves the sound of their own voice droning on about health and safety for seven hours.
Like a lot of these driver training courses, there are a couple of useful tips and info you might implement more often, that you’ve either forgotton or dont think much about.
You might find it helpful, depends on quality of trainer and how they interact with you I often find.

There is not a lot of difference between LGV and advanced driving - I know because I have helped numerous LGV drivers do the advanced test and they all passed with ease after as little as 1 run out prior to test
yup did “the smith system” same old same old, passed a day.
My biggest issue with the smiths training is as follows.
Basically it is teaching you mostly what you already know and do as someone who has been driving for a significant amount of time.
I would say it is more useful to newer drivers if they are prepared to be open minded about it and learn from it.
But as with most things it’s puts more onus upon you as a driver to avoid all situations that could cause an accident, which most of us do anyway 99% of the time. It sadly ends up being used merely as a tool for box ticking to say you have bee trained to a higher standard and giving the company more option to sack you in the event of an accident that might not even be your fault.
I’m not saying I disagree with the system but more the implementations of it and why big companies in particular will use it.
At the end of the day the more vehicles, drivers, miles and time spent on the roads accidents are more likely to happen statistically no matter how well trained you are or experienced a driver you are.
Money making excercise. Some of these so called trainers will most likely have no on road experience at all. Will make for a very boring day for a driver with 20+ years…
simcor …that’s exactly what I thought at the time (was during my "getting my Canadian licence " time)uk held 25+yrs its the same as all the H&S courses I do for COR an arse covering and blame pointing exercise for the company if things go wrong.
Did it at Iceland.
“Aim high with steering”, “always look for an out”, “look further up the road” etc…
It’s all stuff a decent/competent driver does without thinking anyway. Pile of cack, opportunity for the non-job mob to fill their boots
