I remember Tam Doyle, didn’t he come from Maryhill?
As to the Fleet Number, I am now not sure it was 999, maybe it was 888!
Tam worked with Tam Ash at Carntyne on recovery after Smiths (No hill too steep - No ditch too deep!), last time I met him he was working for an Irish firm who hauled mushrooms. Haven’t seen him for years.
Alex

How many of you out there knew that SoM had a tanker trailer that had 2 independant torpedo tanks bolted to the trailer chassis?
Both were filled with Bromine from Anglesea, the Bromine being distilled from seawee d,we then night trunked it to Maddiston,I seem to remember it was used by ICI,Grangemouth,IIRC!

loaded it a couple of times it was based in cheetham hill depot it was a 33’ highway trailer and the pods were lead lined if i remember very dodgy stuff lol…saftey gear was a wooden box will a pair of wellies and plastic goggles the guys that loaded it wore space suits lol
Dodgey stuff indeed,I wouldnt like it my mug of tea!!
But I think you are correct about the trailer,it was a 33ft,although I never had any H & S gear in the cab or on the trailer, easy days werent they■■?
We only had the one trailer,so I guess it took along time to empty @ ICI,before being shunted down again,I dont recall ever bringing it back from Crook,Tebay or Garstang where I used to change over with the Scots drivers from Maddiston,so it must have come back down perhaps to Newton Le Willows Branch and loaded up from there and driven to North St, Cheetham Hill to go up on nights,Newton only did southern change overs IIRC.
hi david
did it out of manchester depot on days went over to newton-le-willows depot on a fri night (remember tony ) went over to angelsey through the old bridge very tight lol loaded and back to newton sat night H & S gear was in a wodden box think it was wellies or rubber gloves and goggles
do you remember harold gilmour manchester manager and the haulage company he had could tell you a few tales about him lol
cheers bogieman

Harold Gilmour,or Gilmore?,yes knew Harold well, depot Manager for some 7/8 years,I joined SoM when Humber McVeighs folded,Frank Jackson,“Jacko” also came over to SoM some months later,he was Yard Foreman, nice guys both of them.
I left in '81,start up my own business, but I remember most of the guys,do you remember "Tom Thumb"as we called him, from Maddiston, had an extra “thumb” on his thumb?Did a changeover @ Garstang with him for many years,on nights, great guy as were most of the Scots!
Caberboard used to be a regular nightmare of a load, chipboard that was very loosely steel banded, used to slip all over the place, one delivery was in Huddersfield,a coffin maker, they took 2 loads a week.
The trailer was doubled up over the axles, the top load used to move alot.
