So why not fit them to all mid axles I wonder…
I don’t know what you have or haven’t driven Snowman, but from what posts of yours I read you seem to have quite a chip on the shoulder!! Relax, man, it’s haulage, not real life.
I guess they don’t fit them all to mid lift as it’s not always payload critical? Plus they hump as much weight as a normal sized one. One thing I have always wondered, is can you get a steering small lift axle?
to allow easier fitment of PTO (power take off) equipment
compressors hydraulic tanks generator’s etc
Carlsberg had them on DAF CFs a few years ago and they used to eat wheel bearings.

'Cos they look really silly.
We have them on ours, much lighter than a second steer.
Blower, plus tipping hydraulics take up a fair bit of room, its quite a jigsaw on mine and they still somehow managed to fit a 370odd litre fuel tank in with nothing at all behind the cab, impressed.
Twin steers handle better, of that there is no doubt, had a DAF with a small lifter and that mid axle assumed some really weird angles during manoeuvers.
I usually dump the air in the mid lift when turning tight loaded, lot less strain (and tyre scrub) and the tractor isn’t trying to go straight on, after about 10 seconds the axle comes fully off the ground.
Have to be more considerate of fifth wheel positioning and loading, its only a 5.5ton plated weight.
One bonus is that because of the small wheel they lift well clear of the road, twin steer Scanny i had on the cars the second steer barely cleared the road when lifted and even normal road undulations would see it hit the road frequently, can’t do it much good.
ISn’t there a 50 page thread about this somewhere on TnuK? Or was that a debate about the lift axle being at the rear or front?

I prefer a mid lift with ‘normal’ size tyres so when the front tyres are worn I recut them then run them on the mid lift.

I only asked him if he was a new driver and all hell broke out, obviously i touched a raw nerve
Iam not entirely convinced about the amount of weight to be saved ,I read as much as 5,6,and 7 hundred kilos to be saved that’s a lot of weight .

Sound like exagerations.
I’ve moved truck wheels with tyres on, they’re heavy but they’re not 300kg heavy. And even if they were - which they’re not - then removing them would save 600kg, but replacing them with smaller ones would reduce that 600kg considerably.
Unless, there’s a weight saving in the axle and braking system too? Plus they might not be steering axles (although my small middle lift axle at Turners was a steer axle) which would save weight.
I always ran twin steers did try one tag axle but that was a horrible ■■■■■ of a thing…do wonder if I should have tried the small axle…

On the smaller wheels the brake pressures are regulated for a word as if they weren’t the smaller wheels would lock up everytime you touched the brake ,generally they work through the suspension,so the more load the more braking …

Did they invent them back then ,ha ha .

It was the way you worded it. As if not knowing something was some how to be mocked. Had you even answered the question I probably wouldn’t have even noticed the comment. I just don’t like or tolerate people making fun of me or taking the ■■■■ at my expense (except for funny stuff). If you wernt doing that though, apologies from me.
As for having a chip on my shoulder,I dont. But I will admit to getting ■■■■■■ off by stuff that I really shouldn’t be bothering about. That’s a flaw in my nature. That I’m trying to work on but failing a lot of the time!
just been and weighed a wheel & tyre (10,225 ) (only one I’ve got at home ) I know the wheel & tyre size is not the only weight saving but what do you think this wheel weighs ?
60kg?
85
I am 102 kilos and think it’s more than that…
