Small Diesel Tanks

Is their a reason why 7.5t trucks seem to have same size fuel tanks as a large family car? Which does’nt last long if your fully loaded going and coming back.

I only ask as when i go out in one you always seem to be coming back close to the red - are all 7.5t trucks the same?

I would have thought its too save on weight, I know my fuel tank can hold around half a ton of fuel, which is a big chunk of a 7.5 tonners payload.

yeah your prob right - just annoying though when your used to driving a larger truck which you can go nearly 4-5 day’s with out having to fill it up

How much does a litre of diesel weigh?! lol

Dunno about one litre but my tank holds 600 and thats around half a ton, cant be arsed to do the maths to work out how much one litre weighs

According to: HERE

Its about 0.86kg/litre

Alex

The fuel tanks on my artic hold 1.26 tonnes of diesel, which would be enough to fuel a 7.5 tonner for about 2 weeks, but he’d not have any load space worth a ■■■■…   Most 7.5tonners carry 100 or in some rare cases, 200l of diesel… and need fueling daily… :unamused:

In round figures, the metric weighing system is based on water,ie,one litre is 1 kilo, therefore 1,000 litres is 1,000 kilos or one metric tonne. As diesel has a lower density then water,1,000 litres of it would be less than one tonne, about 850 kilos or 0.85 metric tonne.

Iv’e driven loads 7.5t trucks and they all had small tanks, had to fuel every day.

the whole fuel thing with 7.5t is so unsatisfying. Tanks are too small to use HGV pumps, but big enough to get annoyed with trickling car pumps.

The tanks are always badly positioned, so 9 times out of 10 you have to crouch down onto your knees to get the cap off and hold the nozzle in there, at a funny angle so its always clicking off when it shouldn’t.

We have old post RoadRunner DAF 45’s, the standard tank is about 75 litres, have to fill those every day without fail if you do more than 300k. My current flatbed DAF has a 130l approx tank, will last a few days, its far more of a pleasure to use, but again you run into issues, as a standard car pump will only give you 100l. Unfortunately, the tank is rusting through, and finding replacements is like finding rocking horse ■■■■, so will no doubt end up with another thimble tank before long.

God I hate refuelling.

The 07 plate DAF 7.5t that i drive has a ‘123’ ltr tank on it but i have never been able to get more than 80 ltrs in it which is crazy. I can get more in the 3.5t curtainsider that we have! I agree with you WildGoose about the tanks being too small for HGV pumps but it takes too long to use the car ones. Just a bit off subject we have had problems with the fuel locking cap getting jammed, anyone else had this problem?

The Mercedes Atego we have in our yard has twin fuel tanks on it and she goes tfrom South Wales to London 8 drops all over and then back home and only uses a quater of a tank! I recon she would do all week and have some left, before you need to fill up, must be a lucky one :sunglasses:

It is a long time since I drove a 7.5 tonner except for one day when I was given a brand new one at DHL to do a trunk. The tank was full, I went to Exeter and ran out of fuel. Trying to get someone to find some cash in a DHL office was like knitting custard :stuck_out_tongue:

It took a couple more days and I noticed the truck had now had twin tanks fitted

I used to drive an MAN 26.285 6-wheeler tipper with a tiny tank. It would take about 120 litres and would occasionally need filling in the morning AND on the way home! Not fun. :unamused:

I wish.
I’ve got a 400 litre tank, and can just about do a day and a half without filling up.

Our 6.5 tonner has a 50 litre tank, the smallest possible tank available for it, so as to maximise the payload.

Same here Kate, not only that but it also depends on the wieght you have behind you aswell.

pecjam, can I have your truck…… I would kill to only fill mine up once a week instead of twice to three times p/w.

in the early 90s we had a 7.5 ton cargo with a 150 bhp engine (big motor for a 7.5 t truck at the time) because of the milage we did we used to have to fill up twice a day due to the crap size tank, mind you it didnt half go well
