“not putting in a defect report when something was actually wrong - 'cos you wanna go home early/on time instead”…
Just to come back to this, every vehicle has a log book, you fill it in at start of shift. If it has a defect you can’t use it until its been rectified. Never in my life have i run a defect check at the end of my shift.

It gets worse. Last night I loaded and filled up as usual. I had a later start today. Turned up at 8am my fridge trailer was sat on its own. [zb] had taken the unit and I had to hook up the second unit and guess what fill up also.
Didn’t see him today but I’m going to make sure I see him tomorrow
Is it like this at all the places you work or just this one ?
I always prefered Royal Mails way of working, when you finish just park it up and leave it. Your start time would incorporate a “service time” for fuelling up checking levels etc… Can’t go wrong with that, if you don’t have enough of anything then its only one persons fault.
What RM office had that as a policy?
despite being a national company there are systems that operate at local level. Some offices require fuelling at start of shift (only the driver using it can be responsible for running out of fuel that way)
Others require that the vehicle is fuelled at the end (how would the driver know if it hadn’t been fuelled and had a faulty gauge?)
All duties have time for servicing your vehicle at the start and less time at the end to do any debrief or report defects.
You can’t base all your RM knowledge on the fact you used to work at one depot. Things change and you always bring up RM in conversation. It often sounds like you are realy bitter about leaving while trying to justify how ‘happy’ you are on agency despite lambasting them the rest of the time.
