I’ve realised that i’ve never informed my car insurance company of accidents that
took place during work time and were covered by my employers insurance policy.
I’ve had a couple of dings in the 5 years i’ve been working as a driver, one of which,
quite recently, was my fault. I doubt if ‘own-fault’ is relevant as they say you must
inform them of any accident in the last 5 years.
I’ve confirmed that my name is attached to any company claim, but no other personal info.
I know I should be reporting work-related accidents, that’s the right thing to do to cover my ■■■.
But…will the info be cross-referenced?
I informed my last insurance company that I had an accident in a works vehicle, and was told by them that it wouldn’t affect my personal policy. When i queried it, I was given the same answer, although I suspect that not all insurance companies take the same view.
In my opinion you pay over the odds for personal car insurance because you drive for a living, so I’m not gonna give them any info that’ll allow them to shaft me even more.
I would advise them of any accidents and if they want details, send them via recorded delivery and keep copies. PI claims can bankrupt you if they repudiate the claim on the grounds of undisclosed information. They are like bookies, happy to take the money, not so happy to pay out.
When I have renewed policies with new insurers I have not been asked for proof of NCB, they only ask for that if you make a claim.
I wouldn’t say anything. On the subject, my car insurance has gone from about £600, 5 years back to £1100 and the most recent renewal quote, Direct Line want £2400. I was a bit naughty about 5 years a go which prompted the jump from £600 to £1100 but they’re still having a laugh ain’t they with the last quote. Car’s only worth about £2k. Time to go 3rd party me thinks. These spurious insurance claims really are getting out of hand. I’ve got ten years no claims as well.

i have had that price going up mine went up by £240 so i went and got a trade policy and started dealing in motors i pay now £625 fully comp on any car
I’ve thought of making it a company car as I’m a sole trader, I got quoted £1600 by towergate so that’s an improvement. I just haven’t questioned the price from Direct Line yet, I know they always ratchet it up a certain % to see if they can take the mickey on top of the natural justified rise but I might just go with someone else without giving them the chance to match the cheaper price as I think they’ve been taking the mickey for a fair few years now.
With any insurance, you only answer the questions asked without volunteering any more information.
Have you had any accidents in the past 3 years?
For that I would only answer about accidents about a private car, unless it asked me about work related accidents. I think many people say things without thinking, the best way of doing it is to use an online comparison site.
Have you been convicted of any speeding offence? No, ignore the camera that flashed you last week as you haven’t had the NIP yet

When filling out accident reports. the information required usually involves vehicle details, company address, your contact address etc. There is also a slight advantage (legal or not) for agency drivers, so when filling in your contact address put the address of the agency office. Any correspondance will reach you should the insurers wish to contact you. but your own personnel address will not show up on the MIB database as being involved in a minor accident involving a truck
