my new shifts are 1.00 /3.00 starts[middle of the night] until 13.00 ish,not sure i could sleep before i go to work as id have the fear i wouldnt wake up so as ive been told i could have 4 hr waits at some r.d.c , could i get some kip in my cab or have you got to be awake ready for when your tipped, will they knock you up. been to a few a few years ago but as it was the odd night on agency i normally sat in waiting room chatting
some rdc’s your allowed to stay in cab whilst your being tipped, asda, iceland, tescos used to make you lock up your unit and wait in drivers room, and aldi and neto you are made to tip the load yourself, i havent been on rdc work since may last year so i dont know if any of this has changed since then sure others on here will know more than me
theres not many rdcs where you have to wait for 4 hours .
i used to work midnight till dinnertime and its just a case of altering your sleep patterns to suit the work. staying awake till late on will end up in distaster. get yourself to bed about teatime is the only way to work them shifts.
they dont half play havoc with your social life (which you shouldnt have being a truck driver

I dont mean this to come over as preaching but it probably will do
Some people can work these unusual hours but a lot cannot. YOU have to make the decision as to wether you will be alert to drive. Just think how many incidents there are with tired drivers and if you have got 44 tonne, imagine the carnage that could cause in a tired drivers’ hands. SAFETY should always be your first priority.
Good luck with those hours, i used to start about midnight to approx 11 or 12 and that shift pattern is a nightmare.I would be home just after midday and would be dog tired and then would wake again at 4 in the afternoon.
Over a period of time it really mucks your body up.
