Slater's Transport, Kirby Misperton

Hi all,

Is anybody on here ex-Slater’s? My dad did his class 1 with them in 1976, and worked for a whole on the Vauxhall contract between harwich navyard and Luton, and tramped for them for a while when that contract ended. His Foden was fleet number 315, reg HVY360N.

I never worked for them, but I knew a lot of the lads on there, and I hired a few trailers from them at different times. 1976, Maurice Foxton had just taken charge if I remember right from Sid Phillips. A few of the lads are still kicking around In Pickering and Malton.

I did my class 2 training with them on an old 1968 Foden S34 eight legged tipper back in 1976 when they were part of the Thomas Tilling group.

Pete.

I new one or two of their drivers when I used to load tinplate out of Endevour Wharf at Whitby, They were a canny set of lads who gave me some good advice when loading the large palleted coils for Carlisle,Happy days, Regards Larry.

Whitby Docks, the Tin plate, I remember those loads Larry. Although I never worked for them, I did on the odd occasion do a load or two as a subbie. Christ those loads were bloody heavy, we used to have to climb up Blue Bank 1 in 4, out of Sleights, then over the moor past Fylingdales, past the Saltersgate Pub, then struggle up Saltersgate Bank with that terrible corner half way up. Then a nice drop down to Pickering and into the yard at Kirbymisperton. What a job that was, especially in the wet or the winter.

Aye allways fully freighted, We used to load them through Hoggarths Transport, We used to also load for Tyneside Tin Printers at Fawdon with the 1 tonne packs, good clean loads, But of course as you know they had to be double sheeted, The last time I loaded for Fawdon was from Dawsons at Middlesboro, & I think Hoggarths is finished now, The last time I was past their yard it was empty, Regards Larry.

One of Slaters many Micky Mouse Fodens, Regards Larry.
