I thought it might be of interest to have somewhere we could put stupid rules and safety policy.
I was talking to a driver in France who was telling me that a factory he loads from will not allow him to reverse onto the loading bay. He must line it up and then drop the trailer and a shunter then backs it on the ramp.
Not thousands of miles away, but they make crisps and Liberace is a regular. Could it be true?
Other things that can annoy you that have no logic can be posted here.
Maybe we can compile the Alternative Health and Safety Guide.
Drivers are not allowed to use the shower because they leave water on the floor

Not as far as I know - they won’t pigging do it for me anyway but stranger things have happened .
If that’s the case, why can’t the the trailer be dropped inside the gate and then when it’s ready to go be dropped back at that place to be reloaded. Means the driver can get some “rest”
Don’t drive across that crossing with your doors clipped open (even though they’re on chains). Why not?
If someone’s on it and they swing open, then they could kill them .
Your telling me you’d drive over that zebra crossing when someone’s actually on it? You’d kill 'em anyway you dipstick.
He went off chuntering and I made the newsletter for that month .
I can see the point about not driving round with your doors open, but he just said over the crossing - he was just trying to embarress the agency driver in front of the regulars. Sorry, didn’t work .
Went into Thamesport the other week. Breezed into the office to book my boxes, only to be told that they would not serve me if I was not wearing my Hi Viz vest. I asked why she was not wearing hers, as it was obvious that the fork lift trucks must come through the office. I did assure her that I would put it on as soon as I returned to my cab, prior to going through the entry gates.
Her reply was that it was needed as I walked across the parking area to get to and from the office. As I had already negotiated this treacherous journey from cab to office without any mishap, and she wanted me to complete the journey back to the cab, it seems to me that this stupid rule did not hold much water.
The rule is apparently to stop me from being run over by a truck, coming into the parking area. As I pointed out, it is no different from walking down the street; you watch where you are going. I do not wear one to walk down the street. If a driver is not watching where he is going, it won’t make any difference to my injuries if I am wearing a Hi Vis or not.
It just struck me as H&S going way over the top. Aren’t we supposed to have a certain responsibility for our actions under actual H&S legislation (as opposed to the silly stories made up by lawyers in court)■■
It’s the double standards that I hate. We are currently doing battle with our daughters school.
The County Council employs litter pickers, these have one set of rules, our 6 year old daughter is however expected to do the same job under a lesser set of rules, (her & her school friends are given NO PROTECTIVE CLOTHING, NOT EVEN GLOVES ).
I have spoken to the HSE & this is illegal, I have spoken to the H & S officer at County Hall & he’s undecided," I cannot see any reason to ask 6 year old to do this" " this is a local management decision"
According to the HSE section 3 of the H & S at work act covers “others” i.e. those not employed by the employer & we should all be treated the same.
This means if I understood correctly protective clothing for one in this area protective clothing for all, or its a breech of H & S law.

Yep, this is a perfect example of what this [zb] of a country is rapidly turning in to.
Another post which makes my body thermo’ go off the end of the scale .
The chicks behind the desk used to make up for it down there but now they’ve got some of the I’m important brigade in instead.

And you put up with the school ordering your 6 year old daughter to go about LITTER PICKING ? ? ? ? ?.
Never mind H & S… Front page of the Sun more like it and that’s exactly the route I would be taking. I would pull my daughter out of the school and teach her myself before I would let her be ordered around by a teacher/head to pick up litter (unless of course she dropped it in the first place then the teacher/head would get my full support and a crack round her behind too if she blatantly refused to do it ).

Cheers.
Kids who litter pick as a part of the education system should have all the PPE that any worker is entitled to have and more!
My 5 year old has a responsibility to clean up after himself! and he is taught that at School as well as at home! quite right too! shame the 70s and 80s kids wasn’t taught the same! I agree with daxi! anyone who is picking up the mess of the un-educated should be provided with all the necessary PPE!
Tesco at DIRFT {wincanton} has now got this thing that they call saivo, what you have to do is once you’ve backed on the bay, you have to take this “salvo” from a box on the wall, and remove your red airline to be able to place this salvo collar over the connector on the trailer. There is a key that comes out of the collar, that you then put into a lock in another box on the wall next to the bay, this unlocks a key on the inside of the wharehouse that they use to operate the door and ramp. You cannot remove the salvo without the key, which you cannot remove until they have replaced their key, which they cannot do until they taken of the ramp and closed the door. Actualy it works quite well though I thought it looked like a lot of messing about, and you keep your wagon keys. They also give you your papers at the bay, so once your done no trudging back and forth to the traffic office.
Come to think about it ,this post dont belong here ,cos this aint H&S gone mad like some of the rules and regs that we’re told are for our own benefit.
No Rob we are not tolerating it, if was picking up after herself, as a form of punishment for throwing litter or as part of an educational programme then it would be different, but this is just child labour & we are not accepting it.
HSE gave us the phone number for the Dept of Education & Schools if our local Education dept would do nothing, & as a result they are now doing something but only because they have had their hand forced into doing so.

You hit the nail on the head there M8! its all this claims are us crap thats started it all I reckon, and I detest it, and a load of people going in for h&s which is a payer. I wonder just how far it can go, and them RDC’s used to do me head for stupid rules, …i better stop, blood pressure!
Does this mean I can legally flatten any pedestrian who walks out in front of me since they aren’t wearing a high viz? And also the next H&S guy who berates me for not having on a high-viz, just like he isn’t wearing…
“You just killed a pedestrian”
“Did I officer? Well, I didn’t see them, were they wearing high-viz■■?”
If my own PPE isn’t up to their specs then they can ■■■■ well just give me some of theirs. I spend my money on what I feel I need. Which is safety boots and a high-viz jacket for cold weather. Outside of that, the company shall provide all PPE any employee or visitor requires to abide by their rules.
OH&S…
At a large food distribution yard we are “Required"i.e. do it or we report you and your barred, drivers are not to enter the warehouse, except of course drivers must open doors after cutting seals,go into warehouse and operate the loading ramp, then driver will disconnect truck from trailer and place safety ramp under trailer.
MMMMmmm in the warehouse large safety signs screaming"If pedestrians are in this area, forklift’s must stop and leave area"next line on same sign"If truck driver in this area, truck driver must leave”
I had an interesting talk to one of the OH&S intelligencia about why should I as a driver have to place safety ramps under the trailer if it is your product/container etc.His reply was"You don’t expect us to get dirty do you?"Then I enquired if the safety ramp was pulled out by one of your employees and the trailer tipped is that an easy way out for litigation because"Its the drivers fault?"Why did he storm off with threats of being barred■■?
And havn’t been back there,I really miss not going there…
home base wellingbourough and swindon its important to remeber somthings here as im talking about the horticulture dept here im cristesizing them just ponting out somethings that seem daft.as homebase staff are not allowed in supplier trailers and drivers unload the trolleies themselves
1 drivers must hand in keys surely the safest place for them is in my pocket as im in the trailer not there staff H&S reg apparently
2 drivers are not allowed to open bay doors or operate dock levels
you can drive a £70.000 truck but am not bright enough to open a door or push a button to raise the dock level an place it on the trailer also you have to wait for there staff to close the bay after tipping

Just read about this new fangled thing in commercial motor! I can see a problem with it though No doubt the numptys will forbid you to climb on the back of your tractor to remove the airline without a safety harness and guard rails
Besides I bet it wont fit my truck with palm couplings
