Sita Metals

What’s going on then?

Went to weigh a scrapper today and was told they were closed, being lunchtime I asked how long for thinking maybe till 2pm.

“45 days” was the response.

I was told they are under investigation (internally) as they aren’t making enough money.

One of the other metal merchants had posted a bloke outside to hand out leaflets and there was a big ad-van for another parked outside.

Not sure if it’s a national thing or a one off site thing.

It’s quiet all over at the moment, a few of the other big companies we use have been closing depots and laying off staff recently

If you google Sita metals closure you will get the full story, sorry don,t know how to post a link, cheers.

Just had a look. It seems very odd, all the metals firms I know (big or small) have been flat out for years, maybe it’s over capacity and SITA are coming off worst for some reason?

Cheers, I’d Googled Sita metals and not seen anything and their website doesn’t say anything. Adding the word closure reveals all, or in this case not much! It is all a bit odd.

I worked for a big one a few years ago & often wondered how they made any £money what with all the scams going on.

A £6.50ph weighbridge operator with a £24k Mitsubishi Lancer ?

When the concrete filled oil drums hit the floor when tipping, it used to go right thru me.

A fellow driver told me that a team of 3 with a Transit sized tipper were the yards biggest earners on light iron. They were tipping a full load 3x a day 5 days a week, earning £80k CASH a year !

Scrap metal prices are high ATM as well.

Bet EMR will be doing a little jig.

Fair play to the rival firm handing out leaflets at the gate directing people to their site, gotta love human ingenuity.

I loaded out of Sheffield depot last Friday and saw nothing unusual

I know nothing whatsoever of the scrap industry or its workings but I wonder if it has anything to do with the crackdown on cash payments for dodgy scrap, ie new manhole covers, lead with “property of St Michaels Church” engraved into it etc?

Might be way off though.
