SIGNAGE FOR HGVs

Hi

I was delivering to a Tesco store yestarday in an 44ft artic. I coudnt take the same route that I took to get in, so I turned into a street that was totally unsuitable for a rigid let alone an artic. Anyway had no choice but to take a very tight left turn. I managed to get the rear near side wheels around, but caused slight damage to a zebra crossing post.

I have gone back and had a look at the route I took. At no point was there any signs to warn that you were being routed into this tight turn. leaving aside my embarrassment, I was wondering if anyone knew if the local authority ( Trafford Council) were obliged in law to provide a sign to warn us drivers. I am of the view that once you turn into this street you are comitted to take the turn as its a one way and there was no way I could reverse out of it.

Cheers for any advice

Which store in Trafford pal? Stretford or sale? :sunglasses:

Keep your wits about you & try not to rely on anyone/anything too much, nobody gives a ■■■■ about truckers, they’ll all come out to take snaps of you for ridicule when you get stuck or damage something…

Which Tesco was it? I know the area.

I think they are obliged to in terms of warning you of weak / low bridges etc. but generally it’s considered the drivers job to judge the roads he is turning into (as unfair as on occasions that might seem).

Put it down to experience seems you did OK…move on.

Hi it was Altricham. I came left out of the car park. Left again over bridge and left again into Regent St or Road.

No comment from the “great bear” driver in Newbury diversion last night?

This “driver” even shunted to get into a street he couldnt get out of !!!

Where do they get em from.

Makes you think dont it.

The bit of driving I did for tesco, you were always given a map of which way they wanted you to approach and leave the store! One of the better ideas I thought.

The Risk Assessment only says which way to approach the store. With a lot of them it can be impossible to leave the same way that you came in due to one ways or weight limits or no left/right turns etc. The Maps usually only show the HGV accessible/preferred routes though, they tend to leave the side streets off.

Anyway, a Tesco driver told me that you don’t have to follow them at all, they’re just there for Stobart drivers to whinge about. Mind you, he also told me Tesco had just bought Stobarts cos they’d gone bust (4 months ago)
