Sieman's Digital tachograph

the company im working for at the moment has just got a few brand new DAF LF’s on 61 plate
the vdo tacho on these you have to be very careful with.
if you put it on break turn of ignition thats fine, if at any time you switch on the ignition it comes off break and back to other work, found this out when i went to get something to eat, got in the cab put ignition on to open the window noticed it was on other work, had done 29 mins which didnt count and had to start over again, other drivers hadnt noticed the change carried on and got infringements! apparently it cant be fixed!!
Going to be interesting in the winter when you either stay in the cab with the engine running or get out for a break but cant get the heater on until the 45mins is over!!!

Hi
We currently have a 7 ton Iveco van on our fleet, we set it to cross hammers when we start our shift, but as soon as you pull up to do a drop and turn the ignition off it automatically switches over to rest after a minute or so, is there a way we can stop this happening? we have tried manually switching it back, but it just switches back to rest after a minute :exclamation:

I had the same thing in a merc actros mate but the other way round . When you turned the ignition off it went to other work .

Mercedes tacho centre sorted it . 5 minute job!

I think all the VU models can be reprogrammed to choose the default mode, if you take it into an approved workshop.

It was a law change that caused it and is a pain in the arse when swapping trailers.

Thanks for your speedy replies :smiley:

You need a workshop digi card to change this setting and many others

Just to set the record straight;

There was no change in the law that brought this situation about, rather an interpretation of what the legislation did or did not say about the matter.

It’s not a faulty tacho nor is it illegal for the tacho to select a default mode when the ignition is turned off. The legislation requires that the default mode of ‘work’ is recorded when the vehicle stops moving. A driver may select another mode by using the mode switch, if that selection is made within 2 minutes of the vehicle becoming stationary, the selected mode will be recorded instead of the automatic switch to ‘work.’

The change on ignition off was brought about by industry pressure on one of the manufacturers, apparently drivers of a certain nationality found pushing mode switches all to difficult. The manufacturer concerned produced units where the default mode on ignition off could be set, the vehicle did not need to be taken to a tacho centre to do this.

The other tacho manufacturers followed suit, with VDO you need a Workshop card to change the settings with the Stoneridge, apparently a Company card will do the job.

It’s one of those things that you wish had never happened, but it did, we just have to work with it.
