shunting regs

what are they?

1, You must do a maximum of four laps in any direction before changing direction to avoid getting dizzy.

2, You must, when in charge of the board, become invisible to any PROPER lorry driver.

3, When putting a trailer on the bay, you must do this in a manner which causes as much disruption as possible to visiting drivers.

4, When talking to an agency driver or sub contractor, if it is not possible to pretend you can’t see them & drive away, you must speak to them like they are the
scum of the earth & wherever possible let them ask their questions before snarling the shunters motto ‘You’ll have to ask the office’ at no point are you to
give out correct information.

you missed off - be happy

Ours do 5 12 hour shifts a week, only come under EU regs if they go out on the road I think

gogzy:
what are they?

i would say its down to each company to have some guidelines in place and weather the driver as a training certificate for it as well

each company will have to have a working practice that all shunter’s work to for heath and safety at work

4 laps of tesco in either direction? thats the same distance as doing from livingston to newbridge lol.ill do some drifting with the amount of snow there

i wont be in charge of the board so thats good but i will probably start ignoring the radio by the end of the week lol.least i have a cd player lol

i prob will cause alot of problems when putting them on bays because i ■■■■ at reversing

i dont think ill talk to them as scum since im agency aswell haha though ill probably be floating about like im on planet zogg by the ends of my shifts.

im being asked to do 6x12 hour shifts, just want to see if thats legal.

My mate did the same at Thurrock, 6yrs ago he went shunting for a week, he’s been doing it ever since & loves it, mind you he uses his tug as a battering ram & does wicked burn outs

nothing illegal there gogzy

unless ur planning to do any on the road driving that comes under eu regs

as far as i know the could ask u to do 8 X 25 hr shifts in a week and it would still be legal

their only asking u u dont have yo agree

That’s decent money, you don’t spend a fortune either, canteen lunches instead of 3 quid Ginsters pies

As for reversing, well you either got it…

72 hours of shunting you’ll be bored out your ■■■■, tell you one thing you’ll no be crap at reversing after that

I was a nightshift shunter for 2 years, wasn’t a fancy terberg either it was a old clapped out scania unit. Serious pressure sometimes at peak times but i dont think you’ll get that as there is a team of shunters at livi so you’ll share the work out.

yea i know, its not 72 hours of shunting, there will be quiet periods where i wont be doing anything for ages (which ill be sleeping) but then theres the morning rush between 4-6am which will be crazy, think theres a total of 7 shunters on a nightshift and 4 during the day. hopefully its one of the newer terbergs that they have, dont think the older ones work properly…lol

Most shunters spend thier money and time by the coffee machine, or if they are lucky enough, have a little hut to hide in, complete with microwave, TV and ■■■■■ calender!

No if you have not opted out of the working time directive 48hr maximum working. That’s WTD as in the one that applies to everyone, not the WTD (mobile workers) one which applies to lorry drivers. They’re two different things and the one that applies to lorry drivers doesn’t apply to shunters until they go out on the road.

Also…there is no legal requirement for a shunter to have a HGV licence as long as they don’t go out on the road.

i wouldnt worry about it mate. you wont be leaving site so you are on private land. all you need to worry about is tescos laws. no tacho, no driving regs and only the RTD to worry about. it is up to you whether or not you want to put it on your tacho as other work next time you are driving though. that should get you a couple of hours at the beginning of you next normal shift

LOL, yea that should be funny if im doing it for 4 weeks, ill do 7 hours of getting annoyed at the tacho and a sore neck then ill be done my shift haha

you must rev the arse off your motor all the time, ensuring that plenty of black smoke belches out of the exhaust. and dont forget, when reversing a subbies trailer into a ■■■■■■■■■■■■, you must catch the rear mud flaps and rip them off (or bend them so they drag)

Just remember to watch the red lights on the doors!

We have a couple of shunters sacked for taking trailers off red lights!
