Shunting a trailer with a fork lift truck

Don’t worry about it Rob, I think his Stetson interferes with writing the English language.:upside_down_face:

But what pressure should I pump the red coupling pipe up to?

If I dont have a 6 feet extention on the fork lifts then would a chain around the pin to the front of the fork lift truck work or not?

Is it possible to move a trailer with a FLT? Yes.

Is it safe to do so? Maybe not.

Is it possible to move an old trailer that has ben parked up for a couple of years, and could well be rusted up, or have air leaks or other issues too? Possible….but….may take a lot more doing than can be easily gone into here.

If you have a recently used trailer that has full air tanks, on level hard ground, then a FLT under the front, and push in the shunt button will do the trick. Even in such ideal conditions the braking of the trailer relies on the FLT, if the trailer slips off it has no brakes! The legs will provide friction on the ground, but it is not a good situation.

Possible, to do it, but full of possibilities of things going belly up very quickly, and if the trailer braking system is rusted etc then you are in for a lot of pain. If only a short move is needed than maybe use brute force to shift it with the wheels locked up.
Get hold of a tractor unit and someone who has some experience of such things.

This absolutely…in a nutshell. .:+1:

(Whether the o/p is interested or not of course. :joy:)

He’s been told that several times but I’m afraid all he’s interested in is how much wonga? He’s got his Stetson pulled down so far that he’s deaf to advice and blinkered in his thinking, seeing no further than the next pound note.

Those that do this regulalry know what they are doing and know the potential risks involved. Although seemingly irrelevant to the proposed task, the trailer pictured appears to be three line air and not have EBS which indicates that it is at least 20 years old. If the brakes are seized on no amount of air pressure will release them.

I am certainly not about to describe how to overcome that on a public forum which any old Joe, wanting to do similar, can access simply by Googling the title of this thread. Who knows the state of corrosion to vital components after two years parked, which can KILL if the ignorant - or worse the semi-ignorant, start tampering with them?

The safer way to move this trailer is for an experienced person who is aware of the risks to use a tractor unit.

Try his valley roots from the Welsh hills more like.

Welsh attitude if I ever saw it.

Nobody likes their “great” idea to get trashed. The difference is how people deal with this. Wise people take on board advice received and tailor their plans accordingly. Others don’t and just become petty.

Those forklifts look a lot more 4-tonne machines to me. The OP has a 4-tonne FLT.

Yes, it’s deffo an impressive piece of kit and yes, I got your point. The e-brochure appears to be American though. I wonder if it is actually available here.
