Showmans extra long vehicle

Did I really see this on the m6 south this morning near Penrith. A showmans tractor unit pulling a trailer and another smaller trailer attached on to the back of the first trailer nothing unusual there you may say, but there was a large solid draw bar attached to that trailer pulling another combination of the same make up ie tractor unit and 2 trailers surely thats ripping the showmans rights a wee bit.

   yes you did. I passed it on the M6 just before stoke.

I thought he was just traveling extra close behind like some numpties do to save fuel, I was shocked to see a bar too!

the show must go on

the show must go on

Is that what the driver in front was singing, and I am guessing in the one behind was singing “Who wants to live forever”

Pretty much incognito too.

now if you were to meet him in a country lane…

Possibly similar to this so requiring a tow.

We use to have a load that was just under 100ft long
That had the tractor followed by 2 30ft trailers with a 15 ft trailer behind them

A pic I found of burnetts loads

C.Gooch Freightliner road train: Nottingham Goose Fair mid 2000’s.

Does that FH not need a front number plate ?..and its not a proper showman unless hes got a caravan ion the back

It’s there just hiding under that silly little bar on the bottom

when you have to travel from say worcester to kirkaldy where there is a large fair at the moment its not suprising they double up there loads it saves diesel, when I was on fairs we used to have a power unit then a 25 foot trailer on a bogey then another 25 foot trailer on a bogey and a pay box trailer behind that quite a long load but saves time and diesel.
and most showman can get trucks and trailers into gateways town centres and tight places that would make most drivers walk away

How does this impact on the C&U regs?

I’ve known VOSA get rather tetchy about transporter vehicle’s exceeding 16.55m before!

And some of those old motors used on this work look unroadworthy

There is a snack van next to United Wholesale in Maxwell Rd, Glasgow that consists of a Iveco Daily van towing a big catering spec trailer followed by their power generator at the back. I’ll try and get a pic next time I’m there. I’m almost sure the whole outfit is about the same length a standard artic. I think it is owned by the showmen, as are a lot of the snack vans round that part of Glasgow.

They are all quite legal, they can pull a string of trailers for show purposes but they are limited to a 20 mph speed limit and therefore should not be on a motorway :exclamation: It’s an old law dating back to long before the M1 came into being and it was never changed, the same law technically allows the driver to just hold a car licence although I don’t think the police or VOSA would agree
