Thinking of getting a truck to go to shows and a trailer done out for staying in , can anyone tell me if i need an o licence for this sort of thing
As I see it, no, because it isn’t being used in connection with a trade or business.
Not as long as it’s private use.

Unless it is very old or under 7.5 tonnes total MAM that it falls into an exemption then it will be under EU tacho regs

I know but thought it might be useful as the original question had been answered
Also not what the op asked is that some units on the show scene have claimed mot exemption for the unit and trailer which is all accommodation ,if this is legal or how long they will do it for I don’t know.

Presumably they are doing this under “Showman’s Rules”, and if they are then it is legal if they have satisfied DVLA that they fall under the scope of these rules. I once had a friend who lived on a coach, he had no connection whatsoever to fairgrounds, circuses or shows, but he obtained MOT exemption under Showman’s Rules, just filled in a form from the Post Office.
Same with a horse box.
If the living area is bigger than the horse area then classes as motor home
There is a set list of things you need to get something reclassified as a “motorcaravan”.
I think it’s 3 bed spaces, toilet, cupboards and somewhere to sit with a table.
Oh. And a window…
Been looking at converting a 7.5t or 12t to car transporter with living accomodation…

That sounds about right. I think you then had to get the work inspected at a DVLA regional office but don’t know what the deal is now as they closed them all.
Found the written down stuff about it…
Its quite easy if your converted van meets the requiremnet of the DVLA. Here is a snippet of what they say:
“Motor caravan” means a special purposes passenger car constructed to include living accommodation which contains at least the following equipment:
seats and table,
sleeping accommodation which may be converted from the seats,
cooking facilities, and
storage facilities.
This equipment shall be rigidly fixed to the living compartment; however, the table may be designed to be easily removable.Once you have built your camper, simply change the classification of your vehicle from ‘Panel Van’ to ‘Motor Caravan’ on your Log book (V5C).
Attach a list of parts added to the van
Attach a cover letter explaining what you have done.
Attach 15-20 photos of all aspects of your new camper. Make sure you get the number plate in the main ones, so they know its the vehicle in question.
Now standby for your new log book to arrive in the post. it may take 4-6 weeks. Once your vehicle has been officially re-classified by the DVLA, you will need to change your insurance from panel van to motor home.
no o licence as not for hire or reward think there is a different tax for this aswell
Private HGV is cheaper.
Not sure if the motorcaravan tax is less or whether that comes under PHGV.
Insurance can be less too if motorcaravan…

This isn’t the case, you can have an articulated vehicle as a motorhome type vehicle and it is o licence and tacho exempt.
