Should Lincolnshire have a motorway?

After a couple of days in Scotland, and lovely it was too, I was thinking…

There were 2 motorway programmes going on last time I went up there, the A1 at wetherby and the upgrade of the A74.

Now that these are done, and apart from the dodgy A66 bit, although much improved, It occured to me that the whole country is virtually accessible via the motorway network.

The only county I can think of that hasn’t got one and maybe should have, is Lincolnshire. (The M180 doesnt count cos its in NORTH Lincolnshire)

I had heard that the M11 was supposed to run up to the Grimsby area, but don’t know how true that is.

So, if you were a road planner, where would you put new motorways?

Sensible answers on a postcard to…

I heard that to. East coast Motorway link with the Humber Bridge, and beyond. though I dont think the good people off Beverley would be to pleased.

Wont happen now anyway, could you imagine all the holes that Swampy would dig across the Lincs wolds

Maybe a big ring road around London, oops already did, oh dear nice thought.

Get people off the roads, thats where the freight is meant to be

I can’t think of any Motorway in Cornwall. I might be wrong, but I can’t remember using a Motorway that passes through Rutland. And I’m sure that Radnorshire and a few other Welsh counties are devoid of Motorways.

Based on something that I have long believed, being that the M6 through Brum was a damned stupid idea, and now that there is (effectively) an Eastern By-pass, the M6 Toll, then there is equally a need for a Western By-pass from, for example, Worcester and then to the West of Droitwich, Stourbridge and Wolverhampton, and then continuing past Shrewsbury and Wrexham to the M53/M56 junction.

The plans to widen the M6 through Staffs and Chesire is just ‘tinkering at the edges’ and will do little to solve long-standing problems.

Totally agree. Another stupid idea for a motorway was the M8 though Glasgow. I thought the origonal idea of any motorway was to promote the free movement of traffic.

I see your point about other places not having motorways, but you don’t effectively pass through Cornwall, unless you want to get wet,

I believe that with traffic being as it is now and still on the increase, there should be a major scheme to dual many of the A roads in this country, the remainder of the A1 north of Newcastle being one example. Although restrictive, there ought to be improvements made in northern Scotland also.

There is also no motorway around the massive bottleneck that is Newcastle.

Yes the A1 runs around it,but it is rammed solid at most times of the day,as it’s only 2 lanes both north and south, but if you look at the current set up,there is nowhere to put it without a massive compulsory purchase order scheme going off.But the geography of the land at the moment, would also mean a large chunk of hillside from the south end of the Team Valley to the Metro centre being cut away.

Ken.

There isn’t at the moment but it’s probably only a matter of time before that part of the A1 gets upgraded.

I heard that to. East coast Motorway link with the Humber Bridge (the bridge to nowhere), and beyond YUP! all the way to Aberdeen

if i were a road planner?
its got to be the west and north coast of scotland for me,the a9 to inverness at 56mph oh i can only dream  ,and ayr stranraer and kilmarnock, all easily reachable with just a “few minutes” drive from the m74.wow,im off to daydream land here  .
have to agree with quinny on the a1 western bypass, its not funny anymore, and blocks up at different times everyday?,a motorway over the top from cramlington to durham would come in handy. :bulb:

There are several counties which do not have motorways.

There is also an English county which has a secret motorway…

A lot of the problems with routes like the M8, the M6 and M5 through Birmingham and the M25 is they were unfinshed designs.

They were meant to be part of a much bigger planned motorway network, a lot of which got cancelled in the 1970’s because of the oil crisis.

Here is the might have been map of what they planned to build can zoom into areas like the west midlands, london, glasgow, manchester to see closer up detail.

Think there was talk of the M11 going all the way to Grimsby but think it was just talk no firm plans.

was that you in Crediton on Friday HM??
If so I passed you while you were sat at temp traffic lights and you were rummaging around in your overhead locker for something, :open_mouth:

Yes, that would be my good self, loaded with UHT milk from Crediton and on my way to Tiverton to top up with zoiiiider, as they call it.

I was actually speaking to one of our drivers about this on friday, one of the proposed routes was passing about
a mile from our yard in Wickenby, he was all for it till he found out was going through his garden.
on a plus it would be good for us boys on a friday.

Your avatar picture doesnt do you justice H you look a lot slimmer in real life…( and cleaner)

Hahaha someone beat me to it but I’ve actually driven along the M96, in a Fire Engine in full emergency mode  :sunglasses:

Personnally I would have more toll roads in this Country. Not only are they much better in Europe but the M6(T) puts any other motorway in the UK to shame. The problem with most motorways in this Country are they get treat like any other ring road and the planners just love to add another entry/exit for a new housing estate. The motorway idea of actually moving traffic was lost many years ago!

We could certainly use a motorway link from the A1(M) south of Newcastle upto Edinburgh to join the M8.

Something (even a duel carriageway) towards Norfolk/Suffolk instead of the A17 would be a MASSIVE improvement.

A decent road North from Perthshire.

A new M62/Pennine crossing

Howabout an improvement in the A43/A34, Northampton/Southampon route to?

To reply to the original question; a motorway going OUT of Lincolnshire would be an excellent idea!
